The first gym you encounter is in viridian city, yeah? That's Giovanni's and you can't get inside that one until you beat the seven others. To get the running shoes, go through viridian forest and beat Brock in Cerulean city gym. after you beat brock and continue on the path on the right side of the city, one of Oak's aides gives you the running shoes.

try to catch a vulpix or a growlithe :) those are cool ones and their strong. I also agree older games are more fun, I'm still playing GBA golden sun all the time. as well as Fire Emblem

i think ur talking about the one in viridian city. that is actually the 8th gym. u have to skip that one and head towards pewter city. u have to go through the forest and u get the shoes wen u beat the pewter gym

after done with first gym go to your mom. to get to the first gym go into the peoples houses and talk to a guy.... he will tell u about slowpokes. go to the cave near the begin entry of the town and beat all the rockets.
