    4x - 1 = -9/x {x not = 0}

    4x^2 - 1x = -9 {multiply both sides by x}

    4x^2 - 1x + 9 = 0

    b^2 - 4ac = 1 - 4(4)(9) = - 143

    4x - 1 = -9/x (get x alone)

    so subtract 4x from each side

    -1 = -9 - 4x

    -----------

    x

    multiply each side by x

    -x = -9 - 4x

    add 4x to each side

    3x = -9

    x = -3
