Who will be 2008 Horse of the Year? ?

It looks like it's going to be a close one between Curlin and Zenyatta. Just wondered who people thought should win and why. I'm definitely in the Curlin camp. Zenyatta's an amazing filly, but with the exception of one race (I believe) she's only raced in California and she's only raced on synthetic tracks. Despite Curlin's 4th place BC finish, he gave both the turf and a synthetic track a try. And, even though he didn't like the turf or synthetic surfaces very much, he did respectably in both races. I'm sure that if Steve Asmussen's goal for him had been to ensure that he win Horse of the Year for a second year in a row, he could have done it by playing it safe and only entering him in dirt races. Curlin's also raced all over the world, including Dubai (against the best horses in the world). And his earnings just topped Cigar's record (although I give this factor less weight since purses in races for fillies/mares are generally less than for horses/colts/geldings.) And purses have definitely increased since Cigar's racing days.

I guess I should mention Big Brown in this question. Even though I'm not a big Big Brown fan, some people might think he deserves to be Horse of the Year.

Also, does anyone know when Horse of the Year is announced?

Thanks to everyone who provides an opinion.

The award for Horse of the year is given in January at the eclipse awards. It is televised on TVG. Who will be HOY? Well Curlin is certainly in the run for it, and as you said, Zenyatta is up for grabs too. Big Brown? Well the awards are voted on by the Daily Racing Form, National Turf writers, and the National Thoroughbred Racing Assoc. So I guess we will have to see who they vote for. My money would have to be on Curlin

Tough question, Curlin could win the horse of the year but Zenyatta is another good filly and shes impressive undefeated record. Curlin is the only horse to have the most earnings. Raven's Pass and Big Brown? i dont think they'll be in it. Raven's Pass has won only once and Big Brown was an upset in the Belmont Stakes. And Curlin will not race in 2009. My final decision will be Curlin The Horse Of The Year. Zenyatta will win the title next year.

It' ain't over 'till it's over.

Curlin might race one more time this year. A few days ago, the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs on November 23 was mentioned as a possibility, but that seems to have gone out the window now: http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20081116/SP...

It sounds like owner Jackson and trainer Asmussen are angling for someone, somewhere, to increase the purse of a race or offer a special race for Curlin. If they can get one more race into the horse, and if he wins impressively, I believe that increases the chance of Curlin being voted Horse of the Year.

Zenyatta is coming back next year. She's a lock for the Eclipse for her division, and I sure hope her connections will take her out of her division and race against colts next year.

Big Brown will win his division title, and may get a few votes for Horse of the Year. I believe the only chance he would have for Horse of the Year would be if Curlin races again and loses. Then I think he'd pick up some votes.

But you left out one contender for the crown: What about Raven's Pass? Sure, it's a longshot for him to get the Eclipse on the strength of one race. But he beat Curlin and a very nice field in the Classic. Doesn't that rate at least a token nod for Horse of the Year?

I believe Curlin will end up with the Horse of the Year Eclipse, barring something unforeseen. I also think Zenyatta ought to be considered, but whatever happens, I've got her campaign next year to look forward to. So even if she doesn't win this year, she has a chance next year.

Anyone who puts Zenyata has horse of the year should also look

at Peppers Pride. She is nearing the million mark and has won

18 straight. Yea, she has never races out of New Mexico, but

then other than the Breeders Cup, who has Zenyatta beat.

She only races once out of California.

Curlin deserves HOY for what he has accomplished. He tried

turf and came in second behind a BC champion. In this year's

Breeder's Cup he finished 4th on the pro ride that he had

    never raced on.

Big Brown does not deserve HOY. He is just another one who

won the first 2 legs of the triple crown and failed on the 3rd.

Did any ot the previous almost TC winners win Horse of the Year?

Probably Zenyatta or a surprise horse not so much in the public eye. Curlin got HotY last year and deservingly too, but he didn't clinch the BC Classic, a huge step, and though he performed grandly this year, he just didn't put himself above the rest. Big Brown did a mediocre to terrible job in the Belmont and many are suspicious of his fading; I don't think he'll get it. It may be a surprise, or Zenyatta, the unbeaten (currently) filly.

Curlin will win horse of the year. he better. to me if a filly wants to be horse of the year she should race against the boys. curlin faced all challengers. zenyetta did not. she only raced against fillies. whoop de doo. lol. thats just my opinion. as far as Curlin racing again, ya i highly doubt it. i know what jackson said but where is he going to race? the northeast tracks are closing and californias all synthetic. i dont see any options for him but i would like to see him go out on top a winner.
