whats the best thing for a newborns dry skin?

my sons got really dry skin on his forehead, when he was born he had dry skin all over (he was a week over, he was a bit over-baked) the midwife told me to massage him with olive oil, i did and the skin on his body is perfect now, its just on his forehead, nothing seems to help, i would leave it alone to let it fix itself but it looks itchy and like it could be becoming sore...could be be cradle cap? its not on any other part of his scalp though...suggestions very welcome!! xxx

It sounds like cradle cap.You can massage with oil and then take a soft baby brush and go over it in a circular motion. After that put some vasoline on it and try to keep it dry. Try not to pick or prod at it to much other than massaging it a few times a day. Also, try not to let any hats rub against it. Dont use to many different products, that can be more irritating. Avoid lotions and creams with fragrance. Keep it simple and if it spreads or gets worse so the md.

Sounds like cradle cap to me, best to leave it alone, messing with it could make it sore. Its perfectly normal and will pass in time. It is purely an aesthetic issue.

Leave it to rest for a bit and then maybe try olive oil and a soft brush again if it bothers you.

Avoid any lotions or creams with alcohol in them, such as Johnsons etc and these will only dry it out more.

My son's cradle cap started on his forehead, then a few days later spread to his scalp. The pediatrician prescribed a lotion that worked well, but took weeks to clear up completely. Even though it took such a long time to heal, I knew the lotion worked because when I stopped using it after a few days, the cradle cap got much worse.

If it's cradle cap it may look yellowish. You can put baby oil on his head, let it soak in, scrape off the dry skin with a baby comb.

If it's just dry skin on his face, buy Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash, & Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream. It's fragrance free & helps dry skin, even dry skin from eczema. Make sure you lotion your baby up after every bath.

My son has this problem, not real severe but for sure the lotion i use is Soothing Naturals by Johnson, but for head and face I use Vanicream.( I found it at my local pharmacy) It works really well for Eczema too. I use this on the face and head because my boys always broke out if i put sented lotion on the face.

  • Aquaphor, aquaphor, aquaphor. Slightly on the expensive side (about $5 or $6 for a tube) but worth every penny. Zaps dryness with a quickness.

DO NOT PUT ANYTHING ON IT! its normal for a new born to have dry skin! let it finish drying out! putting lotions, or olive oils or anything is only going to cause him to "peel" longer! you can get a soft wet wash cloth and gently rub his head while bathing him to help to exfoliate! both my babies had this, its COMPLETELY normal so dont worry! most babies do get dry scalps!

My son has this also and I got some Lemnis Fatty Cream from the doctor. It is a greasy formula but it is mild on baby's skin and works a treat.
