I can't get rid of my malware, what can I do?

I have a windows XP. On the bottom near the clock, there is this big red circle with a white X in the middle. Every now and then it tries to install Anti-Virus Pro 2009, which is a fake anti-virus software. I used several different programs but I can't get rid of it. It stays there in the bar. What can I do about it?

It has stopped my AVG, and Spy S&D from loading. My web browser is having some problems too.

Antivirus 2009 (or 2008, or Antivirus XP2009 or dozens of other names - there are many clones of this rogue software) is a piece of malware that infects your computer and constantly pops up notices that you have an infection and you have to buy or update Antivirus 2009. This is a scam to trick you into paying $30 for some useless software. The malware installed when you downloaded something from the web, sometimes masquerading as a video codec or other useful software. It is persistent, and infects a number of Windows files.

It is too clever to just delete it or add/remove it. It may even block your Task Manager and block Internet access to antivirus sites.

First download the following (if the virus is blocking your internet, you may have to download these on another machine and burn to CD or copy to a USB memory stick)

    Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

    Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefr...

    CCleaner (cleans out caches) http://www.ccleaner.com/

    Avast! 4 Home: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Now, start the machine in Safe Mode (hit the F8 function key as the machine boots up, and choose Safe mode)

Turn off System Restore on your machine, but only until you get this fixed - many of these trojans get copied into the System Restore files, which anti-virus programs aren't allowed to touch and the viruse could reinstall themselves from there. My Computer > Properties > System Restore.

Then run Malwarebytes, and clean everything it says

    Then run Superantispyware

Then run Avast - If a virus infection is persistent, use Avast to do a boot-scan - click on "schedule boot-scan" and restart the computer

    Then run CCleaner

Then turn System Restore back on.

Now install the antivirus program and antispyware program of your choice to do continuous scanning, and make sure you keep it up to date.

Always keep your Windows, web browser and Java software up to date - frequent patches are released to plug security holes.

Download malwarebytes. It's awesome for removing anti virus pro 2009. You can get it from http://malwarebytes.org/

If you can't download install and update it because of your malware then start in safemode by tapping F8 on startup and choose safemode with network connection.

Another way would be to go to Start > Run > Type Msconfig and hit enter. Under BOOT.INI check the /safeboot box and click the network box next to it. Restart your computer. Download malwarebytes update and run it.

    Remove everything it finds

You must restart your computer in safe mode with networking as the infection will block your access to real anti virus programs - Safe mode should keep it quiet as you work and the networking part will still allow you to download programs to help you -

First > Download Malwarebytes > Update > Run full scan and delete any infections found - You can also run Spybot S&D while in safe mode to make sure you catch all of the infection - If there is any other problems I always go to http://www.nicklockard.com/ for good free advice and very good service if I need it -

copy the files you want onto a cd or removable harddrive.. then just reinstall windows. A total reformat will get rid of it (unless you back up the virus.. BE CAREFUL NOT TO!). Just before you do, ensure you have your manufacturers original driver CDs or download any drivers you may need from their website before reformatting (Most computers can do this themselves.. but its just the specialty things like wireless cards which cant be automatically installed which you might need)

Theres no point messing around with cleanup tools anyway, this might take you a little while, depending on your experience (enough practice has a full reformat and re-config of my laptop down to two hours flat) but its probably the best way. And install AVG and a good firewall before you even connect to the internet after you've reformatted.

    Best of luck!
