How should I prepare to move to Ann Arbor, Michigan?

I'm in Dallas, Tx, right now. Employment and real estate prices here are great compared to Michigan. We're moving next summer to attend the U of Michigan at Ann Arbor. I'm pretty concerned about all the buzz I keep hearing around the economy, especially in Michigan's Detroit area. We are going to visit next month to get the feel of things, but as far as buying a home in Ann Arbor... at this point, is it smart? How bad could things get economically for Michigan and what are some ways of preparing to transition smoothly? My husband currently works as an EMT in an ER here. What is the likelihood of him finding a similar job in Ann Arbor?

He'll have NO PROBLEM finding a job in health care in Michigan, especially in Ann Arbor which has the U of M Hospital, St. Joseph's hospital and Saline Hospital nearby. As far a buying a house in Michigan, it is actually a GREAT time to do so because you can get a great house for really cheap right now. Of all the cities in Michigan, Ann Arbor is still doing fairly well because their economy is fairly diversified.

Things are about as bad as they can get for the automotive industry...they can only get better.

Buy some warmer clothes. You will probably have a weather shock. I would not buy a house anywhere right now. The market will probably bottom out in 2009. Rent for a while and find out which area you like. It may take some time to find what you like. Secure employment before you come to move anywhere. You are going to a great university and Ann Arbor is a nice city. Yes, the economy is in a recession and Michigan has been for a long time, so we are used to it. The rest of the country is just catching up and it won't be pretty. Save your money and don't jump too fast into anything.

Usually I would agree with the comments about no problems with healthcare jobs, and there may not be any in Ann Arbor but yesterday I was informed several area hospitals have had decreased ER traffic in Oakland County since October. So I suggest seeing if the trend continues.

As to purchasing a home in AA. Homes in some areas decreased when Pfizer consolidated and left the area. They have stabilized in most areas. I can recommend some local RE/MAX and other companies professionals to help you explore your options. If you will only be in AA four to six years, it may be better to lease, but that would depend upon what happens next summer. The AA area is not entirely auto dependent.

Besides the large hospital Human Resource Departments, you could search for employment on the website below. If you create an account, do not include your private email address in resume get a throw away email. This is a State of Michigan run website.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me through Yahoo anonymously. Property search for the area is available on my profile.

To fit in in Ann Arbor:

    - buy an old volvo or prius

    - stop shaving

    - remember that deodorant is The Man's way of repressing your natural self.

    - join Greenpeace, but continue to eat sushi while knowing Japan kills whales

    - join PETA, but secretly adore Arbys and continue to wear a leather thong

    - embrace Alternative Anything, especially if it comes from somewhere else.

    - join a comune, but quit when it comes time to donate your fair share.

Those are just a few of my thoughts on how to fit in, you've gotten a lot of good advice, make sure you do your homework and don't buy a house before living here awhile.

It can get chilly here. Some people adapt, and some people can't fathom going out when it is -15. You will need a season or two to find out if you like it here.

Spring is a blessing here, it is so pretty around AnnArbor, it will make you cry. Summer slides in a little late in June and strolls through September in style; fall was lazy this year, but winter just issued its arrivial with a cold slap to our faces.

A lot of people like A2 or "A square" in the local hep talk ... the most stabile of economies in the region. If you've been accepted at Michigan, and they've given you some cash, that must mean your a pretty special gal and that hubby is a lucky guy.

Welcome, dress warm, buy mittens, and kiss a lot. It works for the rest of us.

Ann Arbor, well at least you did your homework. Michigan is like a beautiful stranger with a drug problem. I'd keep the condom on and just get an apartment till I knew for sure that this is what will work for me and my family.

Also calculate the cost of coming here and put that amount in a 12 month CD, that way you can have money to make a quick exit if you get 'burned'

I suggest you secure work for your husband BEFORE you move. Their unemployment rate is the highest in the nation. Pay is low also. Not to mention he will have to get his emt in michigan before he can work as one. Might consider getting his paramedic first before you move. Good Luck
