Help with selecting an iPod / MP3 player?

I'm about to purchase my first iPod / MP3 player. I think everybody in the world has one except me!

I have a *huge* collection of CD's, and I'd like to transfer most of the music to the player. So I'll need a very large storage capacity.

My main question is: iPod classic or Zune? Both are 120 gigs, and they cost about the same.

Also: When I make playlists, is it easy to have the same song on two different playlists? If so, is the song loaded onto the player twice, taking up twice as much room? Or is it just there once, and it's name is listed in two places?

The high capacity units are fine for holding everything you own ... but are MUCH more susceptible to breakage/loss of data since they are hard-drive based. A flash memory based player won't hold quite as much, but can easily sustain a drop to the floor without breaking. A playing HDD-based player is going to crash hard if that happens.

There are 16 GB flash players that accept expansion cards, so you can add another 16 GB or 32 GB. That's a huge amount of storage, depending on how high the quality of your rips is.

That's something you want to decide early on. Most people use a default setting of like 128k MP3. This is basically a crap setting. A decent pair of earphones is going to reveal every flaw in the compression algorithm. If you do go for a high capacity unit, then do yourself a favor and rip the CDs at a high bitrate, such as 320k, or VBR (variable) 320k, or even lossless. Ipods (most) accept Apple lossless, and Zunes accept WMA lossless. This is the same sound quality as your CDs themselves.

Whatever you get, also consider upgrading the earphones right away. The ones that come with the unit are crap. Etymotic, Ultimate Ears, Shure, Klipsch, and Sennheiser all make fine earphones that will give you much better sound.

Get a zune, its much more tight than an ipod and portable. Believe me, i have one. It downloads, songs, videos, podcast, pictures and even search for ur own songs on the net, why are u making it complicated, go get it.

I reccommend the ipod, the ipod classic offers a big amount of space, which would hold your huge collection of CD's

iPod classic gives you 120GB of storage capacity, good for up to 30,000 songs, 150 hours of video, 25,000 photos, or any combination. And you get up to 36 hours of battery life, so you can keep on rocking for a long, long time.*
