    red-eared turtle..

You shouldn't handle these all that much (they're illegal in NYC) until they're 4" wide, really. Kids can get salmonella, etc. from them -- although I got one from a Street Fair, and learned all this after giving in to my 7 yr old's begging about how Cuuuute she is.. (ours is now named Rosie The Turtle, whether she's really a female, who knows?). CLEAN THEIR HANDS, and then clean them again. All the local pet store owners faces change when you tell them you have one of these, for a kids pet...

Get him some water.. set the aquarium to look like half/pond and half/land (and get a basking lamp). I even threw minnows in the water to keep him company (she's too little to catch & eat them), and got a filter etc. -- there's a lot of work, cleaning.

This is what fathers do, for their kids. GL

THAT IS NOT A RED EARED SLIDER.

It is a Yellow Eared Slider.

Basically the same thing, but still a different turtle.

It looks like a red-ear slider but I'm not sure whether there is a patch of red color near his eyes, anyway, if he does not have red ears, he must belong to one of those closely related family of sliders.
