WHO AGREES TO THIS - ENGLAND?

ENGLAND

I think this really sums it all up.

After hearing that many cities did not want to offend other cultures by putting up Xmas lights, so DIDN'T!

After hearing that the Birmingham council changed its opinion and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's licence with her face covered.

After hearing of a Primary School in Birmingham where a boy was told that for PE they could wear Football League shirts (Aston Villa,Birmingham, West Brom etc) but NOT an England shirt as it could offend others !

This prompted the editorial below written by a UK citizen.

Published in a British tabloid newspaper.

IMMIGRANTS. NOT BRITONS, MUST ADAPT.

Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on London , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Brits.

However, the dust from the attacks has barely settled and the 'politically correct' crowd begin complaining about the possibility that our patriotism is offending others.

I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Britain . However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand.

This idea of England being a multicultural centre for community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Britons, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of wars, struggles, trials and victories fought by the untold masses of men and women who laid down their lives and of the millions of men and women who have sought freedom.

We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!

If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture. If St.George's cross offends you, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.

We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this.

But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our National Motto, or Our Way of Life, I encourage you take advantage of one other great British freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.

We didn't force you to come here. If you don't like it GO HOME!!

You asked to be here. So accept the country that accepted YOU. Pretty easy really, when you think about it.

If we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies) it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please.

    I agree with you, 100%.

When people come into our country, they should obey our rules and our country.

I have been to Turkey a few times and I was told by a Turkish lady before I went "whatever you do, always cover up. Don't walk around in shorts or a vest top, like you would on another sunny holiday".

    So guess what? I didn't.

I respected their culture. I don't agree with women having to cover up every single part of their body, but I did, because I was in their country.

However, something I will add is that usually, muslims are NOT offended by our culture.

For example, the thing about Christmas lights.

I was talking to a muslim lady who said (and I quote) "it is ridiculous all this rubbish. The Government are making it out that most Muslim families don't like Christmas, yet the majority of us DO celebrate it in some way or another. I love my child to be involved in all religious activities and wouldn't dream of saying to my son 'you cannot sit in the assembly about how Christmas is related to Christianity'"

We, as a nation, need to actually think about what the media are saying "offends" people who come into our country.

Talk with a few people from different religions/countries in your area and see how they feel about it.

By and large I agree with you, and I know second generation Muslim and Hindu immigrants who would too. I have no issue with the UK becoming more multicultural though, if people want to come to this country and celebrate their beliefs then great - it can be extremely interesting, but there is no need to curb British culture to allow this. Places shouldn't be scared to display Christmas generations, just as people who celebrate other religions should be allowed to celebrate theirs.

I think it's fair to say it's only a very small minority of Muslims in the UK who'd find a Christmas tree offencive; sadly though it's often the groups with the most extreme opinions who shout the loudest. I know Muslim's who'd feel embarrassed after hearing the complaints of some members of their faith.

    WOW! What a phenominal paragraph,

however the irony of it all is that it's not the imigrants that are doing the moaning, but certain white collar workers that believe we are not doing enough to welcome our multi-cultured neighbours.

'Lest we be precieved to be predjudiced.'

They know before they get here that we drive on the left, and our language is English, and (for most part), abide by our laws. However when I catch the ferry over to France, do I get anamocity from french drivers because their government sees fit to spent x-amount of money welcoming me?

    No

So why should our Britian act any different. simple answer, it shouldn't.

There are 2 things that I consider a waste of recources, one is health & safety and the other is multicultural relations.

For chuffs sake!!! keep it simple. Ozone, Baby P, Twin Towers, Albanian Family feudes, Credit Crunch, the list of more important thing could go on & on. Let's deal with the real issues instead of creating jobs for "out of work bank clerks".

    Bottom line:-

This is our Britian, and unless Gordon and his cronies take notice, there ain't gonna be a Britian! or any other sodding country for that matter. So should we welcome foreigners into Britian? Yes.... But don't make a song & dance about it, Spend our money wiseley and suck the minority who think we are being predjudice......

I agree. It's the same in any country. If you move to a different country you are making a conscious choice to become part of a different culture. Don't bother moving if you can't follow the new culture.

There are towns full of immigrants who think they can do what they like, take advantage of our government yet they don't pay taxes and expect to be given benefits instead of getting jobs.

Also, there are crowds of them who gang together and don't interact with other people. It makes it frightening for many people and can often result in crime and idleness.

It's really something to think about before moving.

I completely agree; why come to the country just to moan about the culture, people and even the flag? If it is so bad they might as well return to their country of origin.

Related to a different answer on question: Why does a nations acts centuries ago justify the politically driven dismantling of a culture/society? And I am pretty sure we ended up in debt to America after the war.

  • This is based on a malicious racist chain email that is going round stirring up yet more Islamophobic urban myths, there is no substantiation of the Birmingham veil story or the football shirts, and most councils still put up Christmas decorations.

There's an article here about it:

In England we pride ourselves on people making their own decisions and choices on their lifestyle.

What you have expressed is more the French way of living.l am a foreigner, and have become exactly what you want immigrants to be.But l have done it ot of personal choice rather then what l was told l should be.

People do not adapt to the culture they live in to the same extent anymore, because of multi lingual TV and newspapers etc.The world's cultures are easily accessible these days so less urgency for people to become part of the culture they live in.You will find that everywhere, not just the UK.

Remember that Brits abroad never, ever adjust when they live abroad. They do not learn the native tongue or even mix with the locals.or eat the local food.We are as bad as everyone else

    I deffinately agree.

Christmas lights are part of a tradition. Even though we are a multicultral country we are still casted as christain. Nobody should be offended by some lights.

We are proud to be british and if we are not allowed to show it by wearing an englisah football shirt then thats just not right. If they do not like it then they should leave. Its a free country so we should be allowed to do things like listed above without bother.

  • I'm an American. We here in the U.S. have the same sort of rampant stupidity....we call it "political correctness." What a joke....people trying not to offend other people, no matter how much the other person's lifestyle disagrees with their own. To that end people are smothering their own family traditions, and their culture.

Wouldn't want to offend anyone by putting up Christmas lights...wait a minute!!! What exactly to sparkly lights have to do with the birth of Jesus Christ.....that would be a big fat nothing!

So trying not to offend people, we have turned ourselves into zombie idiots.

When I went to school, we colored Christmas trees and stuck them up on the windows. Christmas trees also have exactly nothing to do with the actual Christian religion. We made Santa Claus pictures and stuck them up. Some people say St. Nick is made up, for other Christian religions, he is a real person/Saint. We also colored menorahs, and made dradles (both Jewish items).

We had a little boy who's family were refuges (political) from Mexico. We learned about the Day Of The Dead, and stuck up skeletons on our class windows. Its considered a Catholic religious day now, but it has its roots all the way back to the Aztec.

The long and short of what I'm stating it that we learned about all sorts of holidays that were celibrated by other cultures and countries. Our teachers took the oprotunity to use these holidays to teach us social studies, geography, and history, as we stuffed our faces with cupcakes with dancing plastic skeletons on them.

I wouldn't dare say it, because it's not politically correct, but teaching ones young children about other cultures, religions, festivals, dress, traditions, and such makes them grow up to become adults who are much more accepting of "other people." (Oops, I said it)

This in turn allows them to be at peace with the person who wants to hide Easter eggs all over their lawn, and the person who has a wife who wears a burka, and the neighbor who wants to have their house be seen from space they put up so many lights.

Education, and exposure to other religions for children (if done properly) can breed an entire generation of tollerant people. Imagine a world, if everyone were tollerant of ones neighbors! Why we might all have to make do with less Government, and fewer wars!

But no...we have the P.C. crowd to prevent any possibility of education, exposure and tollerance being built up.

    That's my two cents worth.
