HAVE A LOTTERY QUESTION!!!!!???
I'm 19 years old and I won a SIGNIFICANT!! amount of money yesterday in the lottery and I have a question. I live with my mother and me and her don't get along, well i chose to not have any type of relationship or communication with her. My question is am I obligated to give her any money by law??? I plan on not giving her a dime! Can she take me to court for that??? I bought the ticket myself so I'm assuming I am not legally obligated to give anyone money. But I'm not sure. Also since I've surpassed the adult age and still live with her and have never paid her any rent, can she use that as an excuse to sue me for some money??? & I do plan to move out in about a month ( started looking for a nice pad) What do you think?
Sorry to burst your bubble Stanley, I have a job and I pay for my cable, my food, my internet, my cell and my house phone, so don't go talking out of your ***!!! Anyway thanks everyone for your help.
Stanley how can you say it refelcts poorly on me when you know CRAP about me or my family? Your comment shows how ignorant, immature and unintelligent you are...

Don't tell her you won and get a post office box to receive your future mail.

18 is legally an adult, so the money's yours to do with as you please. If you've been playing some of the utilities and the like for the house in general, she might not even be entitled to rent should she decide to sue - even if not, probably the most she could collect is accumulated rent (as decided by the courts) from the time you turned 18 plus court costs.

OK, obviously something very strange is evident here, besides the question you asked, this Stanley guy is making you out to be " a thorn in the lions foot " so to speak? your 19, therefore my best advice to you is dont let anyone push you around because you have money, especially family, you will always be their first victum. trust me, I know " been there done that ", and still going through it with my wifes family now as well...they will be the first to offer to help you, and the first to screw you over when you dont help them. Take the money and run...

unless there are unusual laws in you state
she can't make you share it
she could sue you for rent, but is likely to lose
warning -if the relationship is all that bad, and she is a greedy type person, there is the possibility she might try to have you judged mentally incompetent, so she could control the money. this is unlikely, but given what you were worried about, i thought i should let you know the biggest risk.

Nah, you're an adult, you legally don't have to do anything with your parents. Morally, you might want to if she's helping you pay for college and stuff. I'd move out and use the money to pay rent if I were you.

I think you're a typical ... clueless 19 year old.
You're LIVING on the fruits of your MOM... You don't pay for meals or toilet freaking paper, you have a computer (Ask me how I know)...
You should WANT to share it with her. (to give back).
I think the MONEY is pretty much moot... the fact that you don't get along with your MOM is a sad thing and reflects VERY POORLY on you. (not her)...
Your poor attitude is evident - with this very question.

um since your 19 i don't think you have to share any money with her. I mean YOU bought the ticket with YOUR money, so in the end it is YOUR cash so YOU decide what you want to do with it.

no the money is yours. She probably doesn't want any money. She's probably happy your moving out. You should be nice to her. I'm sure you will need her again someday.

move out first then claim your money
she cant do anything anyway but it would save you hassle
the lottery give you ages to claim anyway
