Is snow gear generally cheaper in Canada than Australia?

I'm heading to Canada in a few weeks and wanted to know whether it was better to buy the gear before I go or get most of it when I'm over there

    wait and buy it here mate, much cheaper

    don't buy at the touristy shop,shop where the locals do
