If I purchase the Guitar Hero set, can I play Rockband games on it?
or do I have to purhase the rockband controls also?

Yes you can. The only problem you might have is with the drums. You would have to completely ignore the orange cymbal. Also on the Guitar Hero World Tour guitar just the slider part wouldn't work for Rock Band otherwise you should be good.
