It is not required that you take the last week's pills. But many people do just to ensure that you don't forget to start again on the active pill for the next month. Plus some pills contain iron, which is healthy for you, especially because you don't get all the nutrients you need from wheat and gluten, so it would be a good idea for you to take them even though they are not required.

Hope you're feeling better Val and hope your party went well!

The inactive pills are placebos (sugar pills) and are there just to remind you to take a pill every single day. They don't contain hormones, so you don't actually need to take them, but you DO need to have that week off so you will have a period.

If you think you might forget to start your next pack on time, then just take them. Oh, and look at your prescription. If the name of the pill contains Fe (ex: LoEstrin 1.5/30 Fe) then your sugar pills contain iron, which is actually good for you to take during your period week (helps to avoid becoming anemic).

You don't have to take the last week, but it's good to do so as it keeps you in the habit of taking your pill everyday (think of them as reminder pills).

if you want to skip your period entirely, don't take the placebo pills and just start on your next pack.
