Best Reed size. Alto Sax Player.?
I'm 14 years old and i'm about to go and buy reeds. I know what the reed size means and that the sizes measure thickness. I know thick reeds help with higher register and thinner with low but which reed would be best for a large range high and low. I would say i'm better at high notes and i don't have to try hard to get them out but that's not the case with my low notes. take that into account to. With all that, which reed size would be the best? thanks

Reed size depends on how good you are on the instrument in question. You start outing on 1.5s or at least i did for the clarinet (Sax and clarinet have different reeds though) and as you became better on your instrument, you would progressively get thicker reeds. You don't start out with thicker reeds because as a beginner it's harder to play. Talk to the person at the store.
Happy playing.

Try to start out with a medium or soft. I play clarinet and I use a 2 1/2 inch reed. I'm not sure whata width of reed would be good for an alto... but the people at a music store can help ya with that.

Hmm I started with a 2 1/2. So if you a a beginner get a 2 - 1/2 . They are really easy to use. And when You think you are more experienced go up a level and buy a 3. I tried a 5 once and it was brutal! lol Buy now I can use one After 4 years of playing the Sax.

I always got the best reeds (vandoren) they take a little bit of warming up and then they stop squeaking. But they always worked best for me. I got the medium ones. They last soooo much longer than the others.
Source(s): I played sax last year and the year b4. I started out on medium and they worked great. - Gabriela IrisLv 71 decade ago

The bigger the better.
