I would say it's a toss up between The Guess Who and Steppenwolf, even though I like The Guess Who, and they did some great music from the 60's and 70's, I'd have to go with Steppenwolf, they were the harder driven and much heavier band than the Guess Who, and although the Guess Who were the first Canadian band to have a #1 hit in America, Steppenwolf went on in my mind to be a bigger influence in todays music, With songs like, Born To Be Wild,
The Pusher, Sookie Sookie, Desperation, Magic Carpet Ride, Jupiter's Child, Rock Me, Monster/ Suicide America, Move Over, Snowblind Friend,
For Ladies Only, Straight Shooting Woman.
The Guess Who had songs like, American Woman, These Eyes, No Time, Undun, Glamour Boy, Rain Dance, She Might Have Been A Nice Girl,No Time, No Sugar Tonight, Clap For The Wolfman, Follow Your Daughter Home, Albert Flasher.
So I leave it up to you: I go with Steppenwolf, only because they were a much heavier band.

Best Canadian Bands: Nickleback, Blood Sweat and Tears & Blue Rodeo.
Steppenwolf is not Canadian or American, John Kay was born and grew up in Germany: Although much of his professional life he spent making money in LA, he and his Mother emigrated to and lived in Toronto, Canada and then John Kay eventually moved to LA.
From the Steppenwolf Web Site:
Growing up in Hannover, West Germany, John was profoundly affected by the American rock 'n' roll he heard on U.S. Armed Forces Radio. Though he didn't speak English at the time, the music's primal energy touched something deep in him, instilling both a driving ideal of personal freedom and an abiding interest in American culture. That vision became a reality in 1958, when the teenager emigrated with his mother and stepfather to Toronto.
There, he immersed himself in the rock, R&B, country and gospel music that emanated from late-night U.S. clear-channel AM stations, while learning English from the speed-rapping DJs who dominated the rock 'n' roll airwaves.
By 1967, The Sparrow (a band he formed) had run its course and John Kay was in Los Angeles, where ABC-Dunhill Records staff producer Gabriel Mekler encouraged him to form a new group to record for his label.
Towards that end, the singer reenlisted two old Sparrow bandmates, drummer Jerry Edmonton and keyboardist Goldy McJohn, and recruited 17-year-old guitar prodigy Michael Monarch and bassist Rushton Moreve. The new outfit was christened Steppenwolf, after Hermann Hesse's mystical novel of the same name.
