Help me. I feel like an idiot cause I am stuck at the very beginning of the game. I am in this forest and am trying to find a key. There are all of these skinny rock platforms that I cannot jump across. Do I even have to? Am I supposed to go to some other cave?

You'll figure out what the stone thingys are later. Look at your map. There should be another path that you can go on. Or just walk around the edge of the area. Eather way it works. You'll find this cave and you go in. There should be a chest in there. It holds the key.
