When you got your hp laptop you should have researched your needs and what the laptop provides better. If the laptop is only a few years old than you maybe able to trade it in and buy a newer, better one but make sure this one will satisfy at least 85-90 percent of your needs. Otherwise you will just be complaining more later.
A better solution maybe to identify what you don't like about your hp laptop and find fixes for it. These fixes can be less expensive than buying a whole new laptop.
If it is memory related go to Best Buy and talk to one of their tech people about upgrading the laptop's memory.
If it is software related go to Best Buy and talk to one of the tech people about deleting programs you don't use from the laptop and buying some new programs that will satisfy your needs.
If the problem is the size of the screen on the laptop try this:
Get a docking station for your laptop that will allow you to hook it
up to the monitor on your home/work desktop station. At work this will assure you of a minimum 17 inch screen ( the basic size most businesses use) and whatever size monitor you can afford for home.
The only time you will have to rely on the built in screen on your laptop will be when you are traveling.
I reccomend going to Best Buy because they have a team of tech experts called the Geek Squad who have the job of helping to solve customer's technical problems with relation to anything sold at Best Buy. I would not reccomend Circuit City. The Circuit City near my office opened at the beginning of this autumn. They just announced they will be closing that location. But ultimately, the choice of what to do and where to do it is yours. I can only make reccomendations.

Depends on your needs.
If you dont travel often and stay at home all the time, a 17 inch would be excellent..
If you want your comp to be balanced between price and mobility, get a 15.4.
If you want your comp to be portable without suffering from screen real estate, get a 13.3 or 14.1
Get your computers from www.newegg.com.
It is a great consumer electronics retailer that does not charge sales tax. Narrow your results by price, screen size, etc.
Currently, I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 with 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo, 3gb ddr2 ram, and nvidia 8400ms. i spend around 1300, which is kind of rip-off, but i wanted good performance...
If I could make my purchase again, (I emphasize mobility) and would get the XPS M1330 off the Dell Outlet (selling refurbished computerss). There are good deals there.
Btw, a lotta ppl think dell sucks but it is actually pretty good and install less bloatware on ur laptop compared to the money-hungry acer and hp. Btw, customer service is better than hp, ibelieve.
HP pavilion dv series are generally pretty good in design and performance... Toshiba has pretty good built quality. and sony vaio is pretty cheap on newegg. I would avoid Acer. I am from Taiwan and Acer is Taiwanese (third largest comp. manufacurer in the world).
But last thing, avoid going to the manufacturer website (such as www.hp.com). They usually charge a premium price for customization...
I would spend less than $1000 for a regular (not gaming) laptop.., coz gaming ones are rip-offs. Avoid desktop replacements. When you decide to bring it somewhere, you will regret it, despite what some ppl may say -- they have excellent screen resolution ??!

Sony Vaio laptops are all very good, however they are very expensive
I would recommend getting an Acer Aspire/Travelmate laptop
They are very good all round and not to expensive
Good Luck in choosing!

MacBook Pro
I've been through 3 hp notebooks in the past year and have decided to go Apple rather than pc.
no viruses. no crashes. lighter weight. capabilities.
number of ports. disc drive insert rather than opening out. battery placement. images have deeper perspective. richer color. lower profile keys. less noise while typing.
i'm glad i've switched to Apple MacBook Pro.....the price is worth the avoidance of problems and equipment hardiness, as well.
my time is worth more than what a pc notebook offers.

What's your budget? There is no best brand of laptop its all dependent on the hardware offered and the price asked for.

Dell has a few decent laptops. And they are fairly good with a budget as well.
