Why Gods depict violence eliminating Evil, but called merciful !?

Their Avatar or Saints talk of Day of Judgment, but support punishment.

Is it correct to be violent in self-defense ?

Update:

Epic 'Ramayana' started with Intellectually dealing with Violence, when Valmiki was turned from an Outlaw to a Saintly writer/poet.

Humans using their brains can be different from animals, but isn't it that the bodily sensuous instinct overrules their control of Mind.

Update 2:

If Ram & Krishna could not convince intellectually to be peaceful then animalism is the rule of the Day.

Update 3:

On the contrary Arjun was instigated and reasoned out to Kill his relations.

Is duty/Dharma of killing above all ?

Update 4:

Was Valmiki's previous job of killing made him write Violent Ramayan ?

That was end of 'Satyug'. We have to return to this Yug from 'Kaliyug' by avoiding 'Tamas' and Rajas' gunas.

Update 5:

GOD could not save his Son, Jesus from crucifixion although he vehemently opposed 'Stoning to Death' punishment !

Update 6:

Lord Ram learnt Politics from Ravana at the end when Ravan was dying.

Ravan was right in taking Sita as it was one of the ways of marriage among 'Ashuras'.

A learned Politician also could be very Egoistic and dangerous.

The Puranas and the other stories depicting God as violent are meant to psychologically prepare man not to do evil lest he would be punished by God.Actually in God's domain

He does his duty of removal(destruction) like weeding out,or removing spam ,removing virus. In Hindu mythology actually the 'Asuras' who got death in the hands of God attained salvation. Some even mention that they want death at the hands of Vishnu. We in Hinduism depict our 'Asuras' as all powerful, with many noble qualities;but with only one weakness.

For Ravana his lust for women was his weakness. For Duryodana his lust for land was his doing; For Hiranya kasibu name and fame was his weakness. They wanted salvation but could not leave their weaknesses. So they acted as though they oppose God as their enemy. This is called 'Bhava'ie., attitude.towards God. You may treat God

as your father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, baby, master, servant, husband, lover, bridegroom, bride etc., So friend or foe are also attitude. So when they assume foe 'bhava' God has to remove their ego by removal/destruction.

The Hindu dieties have in one hand a weapon of destruction, one hand showing 'abhaya'---"do not fear".

'Srishti':creation;'Sthithi':protection;'Samhara':destruction are God's duties. In that process He appears violent. But He is in that act also merciful only.

In Ramayana when Ravana lost all his weapons and stood at the battle field alone,Lord Rama gives him another chance and says"you return today and back again tomorrw for fighting".God gives us many opportunities to mend ourselves. But like Ravana we do not want to search our heart and change our ways. So God kills such adamentine

sinner with deathly punishment appearing to our small mind as violent. From God's point of view it is his duty to weed out

the bad ones to bring peace for the faithfuls.

Of course it is "correct". The Bible doesn't speak out against violence, just against aggression. If it were not correct, why would Jesus (in Luke) tell his disciples to carry military assault weapons when they traveled and if they didn't have one (a sword) they should sell their cloak and buy one.

Source(s): Violence is not always the answer, but when it is, it is the only answer.
