If you like kick boxing you should take that. There is no best style. You have to find one that you will dedicate yourself to learning it. You should also look for a good instructor instead of just looking for a style.

Any and all martial arts can be useful.

If you are looking to take a short 3 month or so class many community colleges and health clubs offer self defense classes covering practical defensive tactics and AVOIDANCE (which is usually the more important of the two). I have participated in several women's self defense classes (as the guy in the padded suit lol) that my Kung Fu / kickboxing Sifu taught. If you are looking to make a commitment (as in ANY martial arts require a commitment to excel in) to a martial art for self defense i would say Judo, a traditional Ju-Jitsu, Hapkido, Wing Chun or Jeet Kune Do. Remember there is a difference between the two. The SD class will teach a few general techniques to use in most common types of attacks. The martial art will teach much more, but will take more time and commitment. You do not have to be fit for either, however the martial arts classes will increase you fitness level over time. Prices vary some community center give free Self Defense classes (my Sifu did all of his self defense classes volunteer). A typical Dojo can cost anywhere from 25 - 150 a month depending on the instructor and whether they are profit or non-profit. My judo classes were 40 a month, my kung-fu classes were 80, my boxing was free through the park district. Important info to know is the instructor credentials. Did he earn a blackbelt or get it through the mail. is his school sport oriented or defense orientated. Do you have to sign a contract. What are the injury rates in class

I think that Hapkido would be a good choice. Within one style you will defensive and offensive techniques against punches, kicks, throws, chokes, joint locks and grappling. You will also learn to utilize and defend against several traditional and contemporary weapons.

The hand to hand techniques and fighting method are very similar to Taekwondo for the kicking and striking and jujitsu for the ground work.

The style is very effective as a means of self defense. It's principles allow a smaller fighter to control a larger opponent with relative ease while the weapons defense will teach you simple, quick and effective methods to disarm an attacker.

I'm definitely biased when it comes to this answer as Hapkido is the art I study. With that being said, I'll recommend that you take a few classes at different martial arts schools in your area. Find the one that you feel has the most to offer you. Don't worry about the belt ranking and any promises to have a black belt around your waist within X time. Those are just cheap ploys to get students.

Good luck with your selection and have fun training.

muy thai kickboxing. It is the most useful striking martial art in my opinion. It is not easy to master, but what martial art is?
