Catholic Church - lighting candles?

My mother was a Catholic and today it is ten years since she passed away. I miss her deeply and would like to visit a Catholic Church and light a candle for her. I am unsure what you do, do you just go up to where the candles are and light one and say a prayer.

You're probably asking why I've never done this. I really don't know, but I think it's never too late and I would like to do this today.

Yes Samantha it`s that simple and do not forget to also light a candle and say a prayer for the souls in Purgatory as November is the time that the church remembers her dead, perhaps you could speak to the local Priest and have a Mass offered for your dear Mother.

*May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace, Amen.

    God bless.

Most, but not all, Catholic churches have candle racks at which people may light candles. Usually there is a box for donations at the rack and people are expected to make a donation for each candle they light. Usually, the suggested donations are listed on a sign near the candle rack. Donations range from $0.10 for a candle that will burn for 10 minutes to, sometimes, $5.00 for a 7-day candle. No one polices it and if you really want to light a candle and don't have the suggested donation you should donate what you can and light the candle anyway. If you feel inclined to donate more than the suggested donation, you should do so. The idea is that you pray for some intention before lighting the candle and the candle burning is a reminder to God of your prayer, which lasts for anywhere from 10 minutes to 7 days. If you feel inclined to light a candle for someone, just remember to pray for them before you light it.

I think it's a lovely idea and it doesn't matter that you haven't done it before. It is never too late. You just light your candle and put your donation in the coin box which is usually near the candles. (Sometimes the price is shown, but if not you can put in what you want.) After that you can say a prayer for your mother if you are a believer, or else just sit in silence for a while and remember her. Your mother is very lucky to have had such a caring daughter as you.

Go to a Church, just before or after Mass. Just say a prayer for your Mom and light a candle. They usually have a suggested donation to cover the cost of the candle itself.

First a donation is made into the box. I think it is $1.00 for big candles, they are usually separate, fancier and enclosed. Then, used to be 10 cent for smaller candle.

Basically donation, then light one or more candles. Our Church uses push button electric candles, so doesn't risk fire. Or use candle stick and light as many candles as you like, just make a donation. Catholic Church always big on donations.

You can also contact the rectory, call or visit, and for a donation, get a Mass said in her name. They will mention her name 1-2 times, at beginning of Mass and at petition, her name, Mass is being said for her, ( then mention her again at Communion, sometimes, ask about Communion naming as well. If Mass calendar is not filled, you can choose date. Masses are said every day, More on Sundays. I think she would like that. Also, stay for the Mass if you please. They just would not want you to partake of Holy Communion if you are not Catholic until you understand all the mysteries involved. God Bless You.

  • I once entered a church and lit every single votive candle in the place. (I was like in grade 1 at the time.) They used to keep the church doors open all the time back then, and also, one votive candle lit so anyone could come in and light one and say a prayer before the sanctuary.

I do not know if it is so anymore.

I like your question and I think you should just do it. I used to be a catholic and yes, you just go up to where the candles are and light one.

The votive candles are for prayers such as you want to do.

There is sometimes a slot where you put a small offering, and sometimes you get one from a priest. Either way, your idea sounds very reasonable. I hope you get some relief from doing so.

  • Your right it is never too late to pay respect to a loved one, who has pass over the veil. Maybe she's calling you to believe as she did, or maybe she needs prayers. Maybe you should have a Mass said for her, or while you are in the church lighting that candle for her, she wants you to say a pray for yourself in the presence of God. Anyway it will be appreciated by God, by her and most of all by you after you have done it.You will receive blessings for doing it. God bless you.
