Can a customer bring in their own liquor into a restaurant when that restaurant doesn't have a liquor license?

I have a restaurant and a customer has planned a party today. He told me that he was going to bring in his own liquor and I told him I'm not sure if he can or not? Can he?

And if he can't and he still brings it in, what are the consequences??

...have to re-visit to see if them laws changes which I doubt.

You need to research the rules for restaurants in your city, country, and/or state. It depends on where your business is. You should contact the local government. You may first want to talk to other restaurant owners/managers in the area. You might be able to find out some information beforehand, through a google search, right here on the Internet.

Just as an example, I remember that in New Jersey, it was difficult for restaurants to get liquor licenses to serve alcohol, so many restaurants were, instead, authorized to allow customers to bring their own wine. But that is not the rule everywhere.

You just need to figure out the rules for your area.

Call the Liquor Board or whatever it is called so you don't get in trouble. It might be a special wine or something that he had for 50 years and could be OK but I doubt it. I guess you could ask him to drink it at home but then you would lose his business; find out and call him back ASAP before he gets there so he can make other arrangements and not cause trouble for you or embarrassment for him. .

most of the answerers above are wrong!

if you go down brick lane in london, very few of the restaurants are licensed, and they put signs in the window telling you to buy your own booze from the off license (which is usually next door and owned by the same family!)

if the restaurant owner is cool with it, it's not a problem.

why would the law care if you drink something in a restaurant that you are allowed to drink in the park??!!!

i would think if he got caught with the liquor you would get the fine. Why would you risk loosing you retaurant over something like that. i would explain to the customer that you are sorry this is a dry restaurant and hopefully he or she would understand.

I'm not sure exactly. However, I do know of a great itailian food place where you can bring your own alcohol. They are unable to sell because there is a church located across the street. I would check with your city, It is really up to them.

Go online and look at your state liquor laws. In most cases it is legal.

I think it would depend on where your restaurant is located and why you don't have a license.

I would play it safe and tell him no alcohol unless someone from your city ok's it.

Depends which country you are in, if it's the UK, it's OK to let them bring alcohol, but you can't make a profit from it. Maybe you can rent them the glasses.......
