For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V...You must NEVER use more than one anti-virus, Even an expired anti-virus can cause a major conflict... did I mention that you MUST uninstall any old anti-virus products?)
I would suggest Avast, the newest version 4.8. Avast now includes anti-virus, some anti-spyware capability and anti-rootkit components. And all for the low low price of free. You can get it here:

Avoid an anti-virus called AVG (free version). It is wildly popular with children and the computer illiterate but has historically had the lowest virus detection rate of all the popular free anti-virus programs.

anything with a real-time scanner, that you can turn on and off - depending on your needs. i use an expired copy of trend micro pc-cillin version 2006. i am updating it manually. it is good for me bec i can turn it on and off whenever i want.
i dont think that there is a best one. bec if there is such a thing, then no pc will every crash or be infected.
but i believe that making backups can help:
- use microsoft's free syntoy to sync important files such as outlook pst file (located here: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook - change Administrator to the username you are using in your pc), google earth files, favorites, etc. use an external hard drive to keep these files. use echo feature in synctoy. you just need to sync the files every time you shutdowbn your pc.
- then use acronis true image, to make a backup of the whole c drive, and keep this copy in the external hard drive. dont use incremental backing up, bec you might get your backup copy infected. just use the synctoy to backup everytime you shut down.
- whenever you ran into trouble, or your pc gets infected. you just need to reformat your c drive, reinstall windows and acronis true image. then restore the backup. you will have a restored pc less than 2 hours. then use the backed up folders in the external hard drive to update outlook (import the pst file), favorites (copy and paste manually), etc.

I would have to agree, AVG is the best when It comes to free Virus Protection.

I think that a combination of AVG and AVAST along with a SPYWARE like XCOPYSE will give maximum protection to your computers. Also remember to keep them constantly updated on a regular basis.
