Looking for an off duty carry weapon?
I graduate from the police academy in 2 weeks and am in the market for an off duty weapon. I know i want a .40 and something compact. I have been looking at the Sig 239, H&K usp compact, the M&P, and the Springfield XD, just need some more input on them.

I would suggest carrying your duty weapon.
It is the one you will practice with the most, and you will be most familiar with it. In addition, you will get more use out of your holster, you can use it both off duty, and in plain clothes details on duty.

No, they didn't even like to issue me my 243 to go shotting. I had to keep it in the armory. There is a general culture of not liking soldiers to be armed. I was a sergeant and would have had a much harder time if I were just a private. Most people are from cities, where people don't normally carry guns. They would never let you take an Army weapon out unless it was an official exercise or work related.

Our duty weapons are the Glock .40 full size. I carry a Glock .40 compact for a back-up weapon and an off duty carry. Mainly because it is simply the same weapon and the mags are interchangeable. I am never without extra ammo if needed.

I have an XD 40 compact that has served well. It fits my hand well and the hicap mag is good, extents the grip just enough. Havent had any experience with the others listed, so I cant give a comparison.

Off duty, I usually carried a similar weapon to the one I was issued. When we were a lowed to carry our own personal weapon, I carried the same off and on duty.
Familiarity is best with the same weapon you use.

The best off-duty weapon is a brain, and a lack of a desire to go looking for trouble. If other civilized people don't need to carry weapons around with them, neither do you. Leave your guns at home when you're not at work.
