Will canceling my credit card get me out of paying an annual fee?

I've just been hit with a $60 annual fee on a credit card (Chase Visa) that I no longer need and haven't used for months. If I cancel the card, will I still owe the $60, or will it be waived? Thanks for your help!

It sounds like you will still owe it. The only good news is that they usually charge the fee up-front at the start of each year, which covers you for the next full year. So the fee you paid on the first statement of this 12 month period is LIKELY, depending on your card's rules, to have already been paid (so you don't have to cough up another $60 -- small blessings!)

If you still have a balance on the card, tell them you want to cancel the card as you will not pay the annual fee on top of their interest. Then pay off the balance as you normally would. You have that option since when you first got the card, it was not part of the agreement. When they changed the agreement, you can opt out and avoid the fee. But, you cannot use the card, ever. If you do, you must pay the fee and it may be retroactive. Read the fine print.

One VISA application states (I'll paraphrase): "We can change the agreement from time to time. We'll let you know by mail. If you continue to use the card, then you agree to the amendments."

There is a customer service phone number on the back of your card.

Call them and tell them you are going to cancel the card because there is an annual fee attached to using it.

Then ask them if they will waive the fee since you will not be using the card. They usually charge the fees, or let you know before it is actually due. Maybe they will let you slide.

Not usually. The fee applies at the beginning of the year. However, if you call them they will likely waive the fee if you keep the card. They also reduce percentage if you ask most of the time.

that depends on the rules that accompanied the application you signed...in most cases, if you don't want the card any longer, you must cancel it before the annual fee is DUE in order to not owe the money...

however, calling their 800# on the back of the card wouldn't hurt - explain that you want to cancel, and see what they say.

If you cancel before the next fee is assessed or before it's due, you will not owe a fee. That's crazy- cancel that card.

You will still owe them unless you get get them to waive it... sometimes they will. But to cancel a card you have to have it paid off.

My guess is they will sock you the fee and nail you with a bad credit rating for cancelling the card.

It may. It depends on how nice the person you speak to on the phone is. Although they have no reason to waive it if you cancel your account. They may waive it if you tell them you will keep your account. Good luck.

Since you still have that fee on the card you will have to pay it.
