Horsepower vs. Torque?
I know this has been semi covered in some other questions but I just wanted to have it cleared up a little more. I understand the basic concept of what horsepower does, and what torque does, but is it better to have more of one versus the other? In other words, is there a certain ratio of horsepower to torque that will make you fly back in your seat quicker than another. Which would accelerate faster 260 hp and 300 torque or 300 horsepower and 260 torque?

too much torque on a vehicle would do unneccesary spinning of the tires and itll harder on the engine mounts as well as the engine itself. the more torque versus a lesser HP is not really ideal. although a little increase of torque, say 10 lbs of torque than the the HP is not bad at all. i would go for the 300 hp and 260 lbs/tq and beating the 300lbs/tq and 260 HP.

Its best to try to have a little more horse power than torque. Engines that have lots of torque can't accelerate as fast but they are not as affected by you putting on more weight. also engines that have more torque than horse power aren't able to rev fast under load the faster the engine can rev under load the faster the car will be able to accelerate. If you take a truck engine say a 502 big block that has 350 hp and 500 foot pounds of torque and put it into a mid sized car and then you take a another big block one that was maid for a car with 400hp and 450 torque and both cars where the same weight than the car with more HP would be able to accelerate faster. But the car that has more torque could be geared lower and then you could have a closer race. point is that torque pulls the car and horse power makes the engine rev under load. for racing its always better to have more (not much more) HP than Torque for acceleration. Trucks on the other hand its always better to have more torque than horse power because trucks aren't built for acceleration they are built for pulling and towing. You can look at the specs on some high end race cars and you will see that most of them will have more HP than torque and then go and look at some truck specs and look at how much more torque they have compared to the HP.

In that case....260hp and 300 torque, would be the fastest of the two. Generally if your racing you want more or the same amount of torque as horsepower.

more Torque = faster acceleration, so 300

torque is more like acceleration and pulling power while horsepower is better for top speed and bragging rights

260hp 300tq is better, torque is what to go for. you can feel the torque its what puts your back into your seat.

torque is what you feel. i would want as much torque as i could possibly get.
