Question about the DC Metro?

Question about the DC Metro?

Hey I have a question about the Washington DC metro ticket system. I'm a little confused about the ticket buying process. The machine looked really confusing so I got the worker to buy the farecard for me. Now I'm going back again to use it and I don't want to get help this time. If someone can explain exactly how the thing works. I'm just trying to buy a roundtrip fare, no monthy pass or anything like that. I'm gonna take a guess at how the thing works. They have the stops and the price next to them so do you press the plus minus buttons in the middle and make it the price that it cost to go there and back? Basically what I'm trying to say is do you set it up like a prepaid card?

I also put this in the dc travel section but I'm assuming anyone with metro experience in any place can help.

Will the real dc metro commuter please stand up?

Update:

by the way, we're talking metrotrain

It's basically like a prepaid debit card. You look at the chart and see how much your trip costs, and then insert cash and it gives you a card with that value. Then you insert your card when boarding, and it records where you got on. When you get off, you insert your card again and it deducts the price of your trip.
