    x^2 - 5x - 14 = 0 Move your constant

    x^2 -5x = 14 Take half of the x coefficient - 2.5 - square it 6.25 add it to both sides

    x^2 - 5x + 6.25 = 14 + 6.25

    x^2 - 5x + 6.25 = 20.25 Factor the left side

    (x-2.5)^2 = 20.25 Square root both sides

    x - 2.5 = +- 4.5

    x - 2.5 = 4.5 and x - 2.5 = - 4.5

    x = 4.5 + 2.5 and x = -4.5 + 2.5

    x = 7 and x = -2
