    I think like an "index" which is an inscription reference to source materials, "matrix" got its name from the word "mat" perhaps as a sort of rug "bottomline" for summarizing information into boxes. A matrix is simply the format of a 2 by 2 or 3 by 3 box.

    It just so happens in math you use thise kind of box to mean something mathematical, but a matrix is nothing more than a chart with boxes of rows and columns.
