Step Right Up and Witness Cruelty ......?

Step Right Up and Witness Cruelty under the Big Top: The Circus Exposed

Every day in America people enter the arena of cruelty. They think the circus is family fun, with animals performing tricks at the snap of the trainer’s fingers. However, circus promoters don’t want you to see the cruel treatment these animals receive. The idea that it is thrilling to watch wild animals coerced into acting like clumsy humans, or funny and entertaining to see powerful beasts reduced to cringing cowards by a whip cracking trainer, is barbaric and ethically wrong.

Circus promoters claim they only use positive reinforcements and rewards to train the animals the reality is that animals don’t stand on their heads, balance on balls or jump through rings of fire naturally. So, the trainers must force them to perform the confusing and humiliating tricks with the use of shock collars, electric prods and bull hooks, a sharp metal hook with spikes at the end, a brutal way of dominance. “Sink that [bull] hook into ‘em when you hear ‘em scream, then you know you got their attention,” says Tim Frisco a Carson & Barnes elephant trainer.

Elephants are chained by one or both front and hind legs during training sessions, transporting, and often between shows. Inadequate exercise and prolonged standing in wet, unsanitary conditions may lead to foot rot and other painful foot conditions. Baby elephants are kept isolated and tied with ropes at their front and back legs. Rope burns may develop as they strain against their restraints. The sting of a whip causes lingering and intense pain. Circuses often use electric prods and smaller handheld devices that are easily concealed from the audience, a jolt of electricity to remind the animal who is in charge. Sticks, axe handles, baseball bats and bull hooks are weapons they use to hit and beat restrained animals in order to break them of their spirit and show them "who's boss." And, cigarette lighters are used to burn the paws of tigers and other big cats to force them to stand on their hind legs.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus say “[their] performances let you see the unique relationship between animals and humans, and help you appreciate the need to protect wildlife for future generations.” Exactly what “unique relationship” are they referring to? The one where these humans force animals by beating and abusing them to dance in tutu’s and ride bicycles. How, is killing free roaming mother elephants to steal there babies “protecting the wildlife“? The still nursing babies refuse to leave their dead mothers, even trying to suckle from their lifeless corpus; they are then sold to the entertainment industry to live their life as slaves to humans. Watching wild animals perform unnatural acts doesn’t teach anyone about conservation. Instead, it teaches that it’s alright to enslave these wild animals and force them to do tricks for our entertainment.

It goes beyond the brutal training and thievery. These animals undergo mental and physical stress and pain, showing signs of head bobbing, swaying and self-mutilation. When the “show” is over for the night, the animals are forced into railcars and hauled as unimportant cargo, usually 50 weeks out of a year. Their lives are spent in small filthy cages. Elephants legs are shackled without enough room to step backwards. They are transported from one strange place to another and then thrown out as disposable wildlife when they are too old to perform or are disobedient, ending their tortured life as roadside attractions, in animal laboratories or sold to people to hunt them, and then display their head on the wall.

Circus promoters say that a circus without performing animals isn’t a circus at all, they are the ones who make the money off the public that remains ignorant to the realities of the animals lives just beyond the big top. The majority of people would no longer enjoy this barbaric form of entertainment when they realize this is what really happens to the animals and that every ticket purchased funds animal cruelty. Circuses that use animals use violence. There is no other way to make a wild animal perform the same difficult and confusing tricks and routines on command, hundreds of times a year.

Circuses exploit animals and have no place in a compassionate society. It is time for all of us to stop patronizing animal circuses and to demand the animals be sent to sanctuaries where they can live out their lives in dignity.

Will You SAY NO to ANIMAL CRUELTY by FORGOING the CIRCUS?

Update:

No cornelius...I did NOT copy & paste.... I researched and learned, this was a graded report I did a few yrs ago.

and you couldnt be any wronger!!! I even quoted circus ele. trainers...those words came out of his mouth.

A dog is a domesticated animal willing to please its owner..learning tricks and enjoying it..how would your dog act if you asked it to preform day after day doing difficult tricks..then shoving him in a crate and shipping him to the next town? Do you REALLY think your dog will be willing to "put on a show"..year after year?

Update 2:

conelius...all you have to do is search the web, you will see. I did site my work, but I don't have it.

Of course I will say NO to animal cruelty.I will never take my children to the circus or anywhere else that uses animals for entertainment. When I found out about what goes on behind the scenes at circuses and what hideous training methods they use...I knew I would never ever go or take my children to the circus.I have taught my children that animals are not to be used as entertainment.I think it is so disgusting what they do to these beautiful and precious animals.

I COMPLETELY agree with you. It is awful how they treat these wild graceful animals. It disgusts me! I have an uncle who works in an animal sanctuary in South Africa and he sent me a letter about a monkey that was used in a "traveling circus" The monkey had several tattoos of different animals and sayings, apparently one of the acts they had the monkey do was identify his tattoos. They monkey was significantly under weight and was obviously abused. I can not believe how cruel some people are, hurting innocent animals for money. This is the only "circus case" my uncle has told me of, most of the animals they rescue are wild animals who idiots thought they could have as pets. Another topic that really gets on my nerves, but that is a whole other story and i'm going to stop writing before i turn this into a novel.

Once again, totally agree with you and thank you for posting this to inform more people about this subject matter.

  • Did you copy this propaganda directly from the PETA website? Nothing they say is reliable.

"Circuses that use animals use violence." That's a pretty bold statement. I can teach my dog to do tricks without violence, why wouldn't it be possible to teach other animals tricks humanely?

Instead of boycotting all circuses, I think it would be best to research the individual circus before going. If they have a record of animal abuse, then of course skip it. But if the circus has a clean record, there's nothing wrong with them. Don't punish all circuses for the crimes of a few.

edit: I'll give you credit for quoting an elephant trainer (just one of of many, though-- you don't know if he's typical or an exception.) But you don't cite any other sources. Where is this information coming from? How do you know it's accurate? I'm not inclined to believe a bunch of unsourced claims about any subject, that's just not how education works. Unless you're able to provide reliable sources that back up your article I can't accept it as true.

I don't think I have ever been to a circus. but i know how sad it is. They are so mean. If humans were forced to perform, and be whipped, and burned, and roped together then we wouldn't like it very much either. I think that circuses are sick now that i read what you just wrote and i will not go to circuses anymore and if i do I will be protesting or releasing the animals (jk)

As sad as it is this happens offten in some parts of the world. When i saw the scene i was shocked and enraged and had a strong urge to kill all of the invaders and advenge the two innocent parents. Do i think they went to far to add this into the game. No i dont. People need to know about these kind of crimes agenst humanity so we can stop them and prevent them from occuring.
