Do kribensis cichlids excavate?

I have a pair of kribs in my 55 gallon planted tank, and I recently went away on vacation for a week. When I came back, I was startled (and amused) to see that someone had been redecorating my tank. Piles of substrate had been pushed back from the front of the glass to form a little "mountain range" in the center of the tank.

I immediately suspected the kribs, but I've heard that they aren't diggers since they spawn in caves. Still, they seem like the likely culprits--am I right to assume this?

I should probably get them some more caves, the female's been vibrating at the male for a while now...and I don't need new landscaping, lol.

Update:

Other fish in the tank: 5 Congo tetras, 5 longfin serpae tetras, ~10 neon tetras, 4 volcano rasboras, 8 cory catfish, 1 whiptail catfish, 3 mollies, 1 lyretailed swordtail, 2 zebra danios. The danios and one of the mollies are "refugees" from my 20 gallon--I kicked'em out when I added other fish. They'll probably go to new homes soon.

Update 2:

Lol, yup, it's my kribs alright...just found the male busily excavating a new pit. He's starting to get a pink belly like the female, and they've both been going in and out of a little crevice lately...maybe I have baby kribs on the way!

    Do Kribs excavate?

Oooh boy howdy, yes indeedy, they certainly do!

They will dig, and dig, and dig, then they'll dig some more. They do this (in the wild) both to build nests for themselves and to find food in the substrate.

They do spawn in caves, though. In an aquarium this is most often an upside-down flowerpot with a notch knocked in it for a doorway.

    Some do, some don't

If you listed the rest of the fish in your tank then a more accurate answer could be given...

Look in front of the mountain as some kribs when getting ready to do there thing will blow a flat spot in the gravel usually right down to the bottom.

If she has blown a flat spot then you could very well be right, i wouldn't disturb it at this point.

    good luck!!!

Not as much as some cihlids, but I notice mine moving gravel about to make their favourite hiding spot more spacious, so they definately will move stuff about.
