why did the muslims split into shia and sunni? ?

is it because the sunni love only the original words of mohammed but the shia also have imams continuing the good legacy of mohammed?

do the sunni not have an intermediary between them and Allah then?

i don't understand the differences! but thank you to my muslim friends for any help they can give.

    Ouzibillahi Mina shytan Al Rajeem

    Bismillahi Al Rahman Al Raheem

    54 : 24 - 26

And they said : 'Are we to follow a mortal man from our own midst who stands on his own? Then verily we should either be mad or misguided to do so!

'Is it to him alone among so many of us that the Reminder has been revealed? Nay, but he is a blatant liar!'

(And it was said to the warner) : 'By this time tomorrow they will come to know who is the blatant liar!'

    45: 17

And gave them clear Commandments about their future recourse. It was only after knowledge had come to them that they broke into factions, through mutual rivalries. Your Lord will adjudicated between them on the Day of Resurrection on all matters over which they used to disagree.

    45:18

And now have We set you (O Mohammed) on the same course, so adhere to it and follow not the whims of those who are devoid of knowledge.

    31 : 21

When it is said to them : 'Follow that which has been revealed by Allah!' they say : 'Nay, we will follow that which we found our forefathers to be following!' What! Even if the devil is beckoning them towards the doom of fire?

    25 : 7

And they say : 'What sort of messenger is he who eats food and roams around in the market-place! Why has not an angel been sent down to be by his side and deliver his warnings along with him?

    25 : 8

Or why has not a treasure been sent down for him, or why has he not been given a paradise of his own from whence to eat? And the sinful say: 'You follow but a man possessed!'

    25 : 9

See how they cite such unworthy examples about you? They are lost and no longer able to find their way!

    23 : 44

After that We sent Our messengers in succession. Whenever a messenger came to his community, he was invariably refuted, so We caused them to follow one another in Our opprobrium and turned them all into examples. So Good riddance to the folks who do not believe!

    23 – 53 – Division of Islam

But the people cleaved the religion into fragments and each group is content with the tenets which they have chosen

Avf ibn Malik narrated that the Prophet Muhammed(s) said

I swear by the one, which is holding my Soul in his hand, that my umma will be splitted in 73 groups. One will be in jannah and one will be in jahannam.

    They asked:

Ya Rasulallah! Which one will be in Jannah?

I am sorry on this particular issue, the Muslims didn't need any help and managed to step in it all by themselves :) Some western powers, historically, did introduce a couple of new sects but their footprint is very limited and ironically is used by the Sunni and Shia sects as punching bags. The only other sect which were helped along inadvertently by the petro dollars of the west are the Wahabi/Salafis, once a fringe extremist ideology is now the most aggressively promoted sect.

Sunni (muslim)believes their last prophet was Mohammad (saw) innspired by God .After him there is non who can hold this position .So our last imam in this sense is only and only

    MOHAMMAD (saw)

So we just follow Quran And Hadith ( saying & actions of Mohammad

But shias believe that After Mohammad (saw) there are twelve Imams

who r better than Prophets ,inspired by Allah and they r infallible .

So they hold the position to interpret Quran & Hadith,

This concept of imamat of Shias is the root cause of the all deviations

Bcoz their imam can interpret what ever they want ,they can give any interpretation of Quran ,

****WHICH CAN CHANGE THE WHOLE RELIGION***

They believe thre should be an imam for all the ages

Their r 12 imams in total

Last 12th imam since the age of five year ,is in a occultation. up til now

but he has a contact with their special person in special way

they have their written communication with them

    Transfer of letters takes place

following is taken by shias site so it is authentic

THE TRADITION OF WRITING LETTERS TO IMAM-E ZAMAN (as)

Up to the end of the lesser occultation, the followers and the devotees used to communicate with the Twelfth Imam (as) through his safer (emissary). However, from the time of the death of his last safir, the tradition of written communications with the Imam has continued to this day, and there are believers who testify that they still get replies from him in some unusual ways

    note it down,

"the tradition of written communications with the Imam has continued to this day,"

So their main source of knowledge is their Imam Zaman

    (imam of present time)

Edit @ Padram ! as u asked muslims the following Question

"WHY DO WE SHIAS GET THUMBS DOWNS WHEN WE GIVE YOU EVIDENCES FROM YOUR SUNNI BOOKS?"

My answer is ,Bcoz you misinterpret ,quote out of context and

    just pick and choose

  • They had two main reasons. The main one was who was to take over after Mohamed died. The second was over a ruler for the Saracen kingdoms. Although the second reason caused a split and has long been resolved (in a way), the first continues to be an issue almost 1500 years later.

Religion is a very powerful thing and changing someone's opinion on their religious belief and religious standpoint can be tricky and downright dangerous. I think those two religions have taken things too far and should be more like the various sects of Christianity who agree to disagree and let lying dogs lie.

    From BBC Religion:

The division between Sunnis and Shi'as is the largest and oldest in the history of Islam.

They both agree on the fundamentals of Islam and share the same Holy Book (The Qur'an), but there are differences mostly derived from their different historical experiences, political and social developments, as well as ethnic composition.

These differences originate from the question of who would succeed the Prophet Muhammad as leader of the emerging Muslim community after his death.

The division between Shia and Sunni dates back to the death of the Prophet Muhammad, and the question of who was to take over the leadership of the Muslim nation. Sunni Muslims agree with the position taken by many of the Prophet's companions, that the new leader should be elected from among those capable of the job. This is what was done, and the Prophet Muhammad's close friend and advisor, Abu Bakr, became the first Caliph of the Islamic nation. The word "Sunni" in Arabic comes from a word meaning "one who follows the traditions of the Prophet."

On the other hand, some Muslims share the belief that leadership should have stayed within the Prophet's own family, among those specifically appointed by him, or among Imams appointed by God Himself.

The Shia Muslims believe that following the Prophet Muhammad's death, leadership should have passed directly to his cousin/son-in-law, Ali. Throughout history, Shia Muslims have not recognized the authority of elected Muslim leaders, choosing instead to follow a line of Imams which they believe have been appointed by the Prophet Muhammad or God Himself. The word "Shia" in Arabic means a group or supportive party of people. The commonly-known term is shortened from the historical "Shia-t-Ali," or "the Party of Ali." They are also known as followers of "Ahl-al-Bayt" or "People of the Household" (of the Prophet).

I am Muslim and i do not label myself 'Shia' or 'Sunni'. It is clearly forbidden in Islam to divide yourself into sections. If you want Qur'an verses to back-up my comment then i will provide them.

Islam was one, then the Shia divided from the mainstream. It didn't divide into two halves. Rather they divided from the mainstream, so now they call that division Shia and the other one Sunni. 'Ali is free from them, and it is not true that they divided because of the khilafa at first. Rather, when they saw 'Ali burning the khawarij they said that the prophet sallahu aleeyhi wa sallam said that no one punishes with the fire except the lord of the fire and thus 'Ali is a god. Then the different divisions started branching off of that.

If you look at history, it was the khawarij who did not like the ruling of 'Uthmaan and killed him, and 'Ali went to seek revenge for his murder. So it was the khawarij that didn't agree with 'Uthmaan's khilafa. 'Ali agreed with the khilafa of Abu Bakr, 'Umar, and 'Uthmaan and never objected against them.

The shia talk bad about the companions and the prophet said to to abuse his companions. Allah praised those who believed with the prophet (all the companions) yet the Shia say that Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthmaan are disbelivers - SO HOW CAN WE UNITE WITH THESE PEOPLE?

It's a long story. Follow what the prophet and his companions were upon, that was the religion that was the truth and that which we need to be upon.

Splitting could be done in 2 ways:

1.one group wanting to change its way.

    2.both wanting that.

It doesn't matter which group you are. The important fact is IT IS WRONG.

The Shia Imams never wanted this splitting to happen. you could see in history that they never stud against the leaders of their time even though I think that they are the truth. (Too much to say in this little space for now).

The Shia continued the sunna(The path of Mustapha). but they prefer to be named shia than sunny.

    Muslims are united to divide

Now we have created the western media term "Wahhabi", this originated in the western world and we Muslims are beleiving to hate one another.

We all follow the same Quran and pray in the same direction, so what is the need of this division.

    Everybody go on www.abubakr.org

    It's the truth.

HOWEVER, having said that, we are all Muslim in the end and should not be divided into sects, of course.

Oh, and for the record, many of the answers to your question are lies.

Shias do not say that the twelve Imams are Gods, or anything like that, how could anyone be so absurd?
