The US Dollar gets you more Canadian Dollars than the face value of the US Dollar.
Right now, $5 US is equal to $6.33 Canadian.
$1 US = $1.27 Canadaian.

Right now, it's worth more, but that varies. One year ago, the CAD was higher than the USD.
Currencies trade internationally, I use www.oanda.com.
The reasons WHY a country's currency rises or falls is a murky business. For instance, while the US economy has fallen completely off the rails, Canada's continues to chunk along (albeit slower than a few months back). Yet the 'value' of our dollar has dropped, which is completely counter intuitive. It's not about actual economic fundamentals, it's about speculators.
