Why as Americans do we not realize the changing world?
Its time to be blunt. We have an impossible amount of debt. We have over consumption, under saving. We have educational issues and endless concerns over immigration. We have a lack of confidence in our leaders and disappearing confidence from the rest of the world. And to top it all off, many of us still enjoy remaining as ignorant and unaware of the country and the global world at large.
So my question is why is it many of us as Americans are so content with believing that we are going to somehow always be the cats pajamas without realizing that the number of issues and problems we have stem from that very belief?
Followup - What would the United States really need to do in order alter the current course of internal decline?
I appreciate insightful comments.

Your right Saucy (Glad to see you btw). I think their are some that are aware of the mess we are in, a lot in fact. But I think the difference is into what context we put it. Some of us know, but don't know quite what to do. Some know, but are still back in the 50's and either can't see that we have created most of the mess we are in, or, are still back on those 'dirty commies' or whatever, not realizing that the blame game is over. Or should be. We are so far past that now it makes my head spin. Yet people are still arguing about the election. It's been drummed into us (especially the older generations) for so many years that we are THE superpower. The leader of the free world. Yada yada. And many are still in that mindset. And while technically that is still true, it's only a matter of weeks or months before that comes to a screeching halt.
I don't have the answers. I wish I did. I do know that the phrase "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink" comes to mind. Our standing in the global community has been all but destroyed. I don't know what anyone can do to repair that. Our economy is down the tubes. People are jobless, homeless and afraid and it only seems to be getting worse. I hope that President Elect Obama is all we hoped he would be. But even that isn't enough. We spent so much time being cushy that we looked to and allowed our leaders to get us to where we are today. WE need to take responsibility and demand that our government act in the best welfare of the people. How to do that tho... Well that's the million dollar question isn't it?

I agree. Most Americans are self-centered spoiled people. America is screwed. The public debt is about 35,000 per person and that's not counting personal debt. And average about 8000 per person in personal debt. I don't know what we're going to do if a major lender like China or Japan wants the money back? We have no way to pay it and will probably never pay them back. Let's say they were serious and wanted their money back and wanted to punish America. What if they were not to trade with us for a year? We rely on them for stables in our consumer based culture. We're screwed.
We don't need change. We need a clean slate and an educated public.
To be honest, I'm getting out of here as soon as I can. I don't care if I have to teach English in Asia, it better than dealing with the bullcrap here.
