do snapping turtles shed?

i have a baby snapping turtle that i bought from a private fish store. anyways when i bought it, it already had a white patch on its foot and the side of its neck. i read a little bit about turtles and they say that it could be fungus. It does look more like its shedding though whenever it just stands on top of a rock and sunbaths.

however i'm not an expert on turtles so i would just like to know if anyone knows more about this than i do. thanks!

Yes, snapping turtles shed copiously. Those little tiny bits of skin can quickly clog most types of filters- I use sponge filters with powerheads.

If the white patches do turn out to be a fungus, add some antibiotic, such as maracyn, to the water. Your fish store will carry it (or a similar product).

I also recommend adding novaqua to the water as a preventative.

You should not have bought this turtle if it was infected with fungus. See if you can return it. If not, there are several products that can be used to treat it.

Are you sure that you have a snapper? Pretty much all brown, rough shell, long tail? Snappers do bask but that is not common behavior for them. If you were told that it was a snapper when it wasn't and were sold an infected turtle, it might be time to call the Bureau of Consumer Protection. It is not a good idea to buy anything from that store again.

I dont think turtles shed. They dont have fur so if they were to shed they would be shedding prats of shell and skin. It might have a fungus on it but im pretty ure turtles dont shed but they do snap.
