External HDD not-writable. HELP before I throw it out the window.?

My external hdd (formatted to ntfs) is being a pain. I'm on Vista Ultimate 64bit. I am the admin. I can copy/paste a file to the external (F:), but I cannot rename files, delete files etc. on it.

Before you tell me to right click, Properties, Security, etc. I've done that. When I enable all privileges for all users and click OK, I get an error saying:

"An error occured while applying security information to

F:\recycle bin\desktop.ini". The media is write protected.

Click okay on that and it will display the same error on the next file on the drive. And then the next. And so on.

I've tried editing the permissions through the command prompt.

The 'Read Only' checkbox is unchecked.

Help me before I throw this thing out of teh window and set it on fire.

I hope you won't mind me responding without the answer, but I have a couple suggestions that may lead to one. I was wondering if you can pull up the command prompt then go to f: and use dos commands to rename delete etc. This might help for a temp fix and lead you to solving the problem. I figure you know more than me about tech stuff and just might help a light bulb to go off....lol

I know this may sound lame, but I have found that paltalk helps me out allot. They have computer help chat rooms that you can type or voice your questions and they usually have several guys in there that can help. There are several rooms for comp help. There is two ways to log on to it. You can download it like yahoo messenger or you can go online to paltalk express. If you don't want to start an id and password etc. just go to paltalk express then click already a member then it will show log on as guest then click on browse rooms and then go to the room list on the left and scroll down to computers and technology and then on the right screen click on computer help and advice then the screen on the right will show several comp help rooms and shows how many people are in each room. If one room doesn't help go to the next one and try again. I am sure someone will be able to help. Generally they are kinda formal about how they run the rooms to keep it organized, so you can type at any time, but if you want to use your mic to ask you should click raise your hand button and wait for someone to tell you to go ahead or that the mic is yours. Hope this helps .........later
