Why is my Intel core 2 duo 2.4 Ghz processor, 2 GB Ram, Sata disk, computer so slow?

Hi,

I have an HP DV6000 laptop with the following configuration:

- Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 @ 2.4 Ghz

- 2 GB of SDRAM

- 250 GB SATA Hard Drive

- Running Windows XP & Ubuntu (Dual boot)

Now, this machine is extremely slow, considering the hardware it has got. The problem is noticed especially when booting up to XP, since it takes very long for the desktop to appear and for the machine to be able to execute commands. I have tried removing start-up applications, but it did not help much.

The problems continue not only when booting up, but also when working with the machine, it is not very responsive when opening up a new application.

I'm at a total lost, and would appreciate your kind help.

Thanks.

Update:

Hi all,

First, thanks for your swift replies.

I have AVG, SpyBot and TuneUp Utilities.

I have also defragmented a hundred times, but to no avail.

Please note that the problem started on day one, and this laptop is just 10 months old.

Restart the computer in safe mode with networking by tapping the f8 key continuously if the computer is running as expected then most likely there are programs or malware or viruses running in the background. If you have Norton or Mcafee they could be dogging your system. Remove them and install AVG or Avira both free and are the least resource hogs. Then download and run Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ You can shut off all but the essential programs to make XP boot faster go to start, run then type msconfig go to the startup tab and untick all unnecessary startup progs, if unsure google them, after a restart go to start, run then type services.msc and look for all running services again google if unsure and double click each one and choose disable. A great defrag tool is Defraggler by piriform :http://www.defraggler.com/ although defragging is good maintenance I doubt that you will see any great improvement if any of the above is present.

You can download Ccleaner here : http://bit.ly/1t3jm44

    To start with open Ccleaner

To make this concise, beneath is my suggested setup:

Under web pilgrim check provisional web documents, treats, and last download area. Most clients don't generally require this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a possibly, however you would prefer not to lose bookmarked locales.

Run Ccleaner and it will begin erasing documents.

a while later it will give you an arrangement of the documents erased, you truly don't have to experience it as it will be a few pages long.

The registry cleaner is proposed for marginally more praiseworthy clients. Use it in the wake of uninstalling projects as they will regularly abandon erroneous registry sections.

In the event that you choose to run Registry cleaner then audit the things identified and constantly move down the registry (I keep an envelope aside for this)

The Tools tab gives you a chance to uninstall projects and set startup programs. Why do you require this if Windows has these peculiarities? Particularly with Vista Home Ed. The windows safeguard programming wayfarer( startup programs) doesn't get a few sections (however programming adventurer is less demanding to utilize).

Utilizing Ccleaner to uninstall projects and after that check for remaining registry passages takes less time.

Under Options you can decide how Ccleaner cleans your records. I allow this to sit unbothered.

Have you run Defrag yet, If the data is all over the HD it takes time to get to it. If after Defragging and it's still here the other thing.

Could be the beginning of a HD problem. Symptoms of a HD's going bad is slowing down.

As the others have said, try running a defrag and download some sort of anti spyware software like Ad-aware or Spybot. Both applications are free and very effective, you can get them at www.download.com
