"The heart is a hollow, cone-shaped muscle located between the lungs and behind the sternum (breastbone). Two-thirds of the heart is located to the left of the midline of the body and 1/3 is to the right."

The heart is contained within the mediastinum (the medial cavity of the thorax) . About two thirds of its mass lies to the left of the midsternal line (that is a vertical line down the centre of your breast bone). It extends obliquely for about 5 inches from the second rib to the the fifth intercostal space. If you press your finger between the fifth and sixth rib (just below the left nipple) you can feel your heart beating as this is where the apex of the heart contacts the chest wall. The heart is flanked by the lungs laterally (on each side) and is partially obscured.
