What are the differences between the iPod touch 1st and 2nd generation?

I am getting an iPod touch for Christmas, and I'm most likely getting the 1st generation. From what I can see, there aren't that many differences between the 1st generation and 2nd generation iPod touch...I know of the volume control, the genius feature, and the rounded instead of flat body.

I don't care about the body shape that much, but are there any other drastic differences between the 1st and 2nd generations of the iPod touch? i'm talking about speed, calibration, all that stuff. Graphics are also important.

Thank you!

    Cosmetic differences:

1st generation has a black bevel and a flat metal back.

2nd generation has a contoured metal back and wraps around and forms the front bevel. It's Wi-Fi port is also more low profile and stylish with rounded edges.

    Hardware and software differences:

2nd gen comes with the 2.x updates. It also has an external speaker for casual listening. The accelerometer is also more functional then the 1st.

One major difference though is the inability to jailbreak the 2nd gen meaning no 3rd party apps can be installed.

There is hardly any graphical enhancements, calibration is the same, and it runs smoother on some apps such as calendar and maps and all of that. The Wi-Fi operates better in my oppinion, I had the 1st gen and nothing could be picked up at my house, then I got the 2nd gen and about 3 rooms in my house now gets service.

2nd gen also has an external volume rocker and screenshot capabilities.

Oh and one more thing, the 2nd gen is thinner if at all possible.

The differences are many. The Ipod Touch 2g is thinner than the ipod 1 g The Ipod Touch 2g includes built in speakers so you don't need headphones. The Ipod Touch 2g can not charge on a firewall connection while an ipod touch 1g can The ipod touch 2g includes Nike+ support( a connection between an ipod touch and a chip that you put on a nike shoe, to calculate your pace and hear music) The Ipod Touch 2 g has a cpu of 532 MHz The Ipod touch 2g has a battery power of audio 36 hours and video 6 hours while the ipod touch 1g has less To sync a 2 g ipod touch you have to have a computer with atleast Mac 10.4.10 or Windows XP SP3

The 2nd generation as stated before has a 533mhz processor compared to 412mhz on all of the iphones and 1st generation ipod touch. It's the same cpu but clocked higher. Don't worry about battery life/heat, the 2nd gen ipod touch get's 36 hours of music vs 22 on the 1st gen.

There are a few key differences between the two models. The Second generation (gen) of iPod Touch has speakers, external Volume buttons, and built-in Nike+ support (for nerds that run). Other than that all other features can be made equal by updating the software on the iPod to the latest version.

The second generation includes the volume toggle switch on the side of the iPod, the genius feature (which I almost never use) and the curved body. The battery life is improved, and it is a bit thinner.

It is significantly faster than the 1st gen iTouch, and after the firmware upgrade, it is simply better. However, I don’t like the fact that you can’t jailbreak it as of yet. As soon as a jailbreak is released for the 2gen, then it will be perfect.

    Hope that Helped!

the 2nd generation iPod touch is slimer and has a built in speaker for "casual listening." The 2nd gen iPod touch is also cheaper than the 1st gen. Apple has a video on the new things theyve come out with...you can watch it at apple.com, just skip to the part about the iPod touch.

the update for the 1st gen costs $10, and its FREE with the 2nd gen. the 2nd gen has a speaker, which is useful for games. also, the 2nd gen is faster than the 1st gen. the graphics are slightly better, but theres not much of a difference... my friend has the 1st gen, and the sides of it feel razor sharp! but i have a 2nd gen, and it feels... perfect. i would go with the 2nd gen if you like these things:

    feels better in your hand

    speaker

    volume buttons on the side

and you dont have to pay for an update.

    hope this helps!

the 2nd generation has a speaker, the 1st generation does not.

the 2nd generation has volume controls on the side of the ipod, the 1st generation doesn't.

the biggest difference is the 1st generation doesn't have a speaker.

2nd gen has a more round back, it can be used with nike ipod kits, has a hidden speaker, and has the new genius feature, and the 1st gen doesn't have any of those!
