When a cell phone is labeled as being "unlocked" it means that you are able to use it on different carriers; but basically it's for the international travelers. Be wary though, because some phones, even if unlocked, do not work for all carriers. For instance, AT&T uses sim cards, but Verizon does not, so no phone would be compatible with these two companies.

The only con is that it might be more expensive to purchase.
The pro is that you can use it on any compatible carrier. For instance, if you buy an unlocked GSM phone, you could use it on T-Mobile & AT&T without any problems.

I was looking at the iphone, and places like ebay were selling 'unlocked iphones'. Which basically means that you can use the phone for any network and you can use any sim card. Like when the iphone was exclusive to O2.
