can i install a operating system on a external hard drive?

what i want to do is buy a external hard drive install a os with a cd and then be able to take the external hard drive from computer to computer and just like turn off the computer plug in the external hard drive and then turn it on and load the external hard drive like a normal one like it will say do u want to boot from external hard drive

    Yes you can, however it also puts strain on the external hard drive and many of my friends who have done this have had the external fail and crash, if you buy a top quality one i believe they have fixed some of these problems. Its a good idea and i'm thinking about doing the same.

    That's exactly what Microsoft don't want you to do so you can't do it even if your motherboard has the "boot from an external device" option.I have try it already
