There are not really any places to download songs legally for free. There are some sites that offer them "free" using advertising on the songs though.

iTunes would probably be best. The cost isn't that much.

these guys have thousands of songs- all are free to download legally! Everything is well categorized in genres and there are many ways to find what you need =)
