jessica,
First, you need to work with a balanced equation:
P4 + 5O2 = 2P2O5
So, 1 mole of P4 or 5 moles of O2 will generate 2 moles of P2O5.
a. Grams P2O5 = (moles P2O5) * (grams/mole P2O5)
moles P2O5 = (moles P4 * 2 moles P2O5/mole P4) = [gm P4/(gm/moleP4)] * 2 moles P2O5/mole P4 = [235 g/123.90 g/mol] * 2 moles P2O5/mole P4 = 3.80 moles P2O5
Grams P2O5 = 3.80 moles * 283.889 g/mol = 1077 grams --> 1080 grams
b. Grams P2O5 = (moles P2O5) * (grams/mole P2O5)
moles P2O5 = (moles O2 * 2 moles P2O5/5 mole O2) = [gm O2/(gm/mole O2)] * 2 moles P2O5/5 moles O2 = [272g/32.0 g/mol] * 2 moles P2O5/5 moles O2 = 3.40 moles
Grams P2O5 = 3.40 moles * 283.889 g/mol = 965 grams
Hope that helped!
