Vista Home Premium Start-Up Repair Help?

Hi, my mother's Sony Vaio Laptop recently started blue screened after starting her computer. We have tried running in safe mode and many other configurations. Even in safe mode the blue screen continues to appear. I downloaded the respective recovery console for Home Premium and rean it on her computer, i tried doing a restore but it didn't help. I tried doing a system repair as well, it said it was successful but seems to have done nothing to solve the problem. We are unsure EXACTLY what set her computer off, but our guess is the windows update she recently installed. We are trying to solve this problem without having to format this drive. After the repair seemed to do nothing, i ran the recovery console again and it started the repair automatically. it has been showing "progress" in the form of a blue bar scrolling from side to side for more than 3 hours. we find that it's been going too long but are afraid of doing even more damage to the drive by turning it off at this state. any ideas of what to do right now and what to do to fix the drive.
