What cage for Gerbils?

I want to buy 2 gerbils from Pets at Home, but they wouldnt sell me them unless I bought a Gerbilarium. I dont want a gerbilarium for lots of reasons, I want them in a rotastack cage. On their website it says rotastack are suitable for gerbils.

What do you think is the best type of house for a gerbil? And how can I get a gerbil and a Rotastack if Pets at Home wont sell me one!! (there are no other pet shops)

Update:

They are also saying that the gerbil will chew through the Rotastack, but I have had gerbils before and they have never chewed through it!

Update 2:

They refused to sell me gerbils if I didnt buy a Gerbilarium! even the manager agreed that they wouldnt sell me them.

I think gerbilariums are a good choice, and much better than a rotastack, but I find it odd that they'd totally refuse to sell you gerbils if you didn't get the cage they want you to get. Hm.

To be honest, a rotastack is not suitable for gerbils. Gerbils are chewers, and can chew their way out. Just because the gerbils you had before didn't doesn't mean these ones won't. Gerbils need lots of room to run, play, and dig. Rotastacks, I feel, do not provide this.

I, along with most other gerbil owners, feel tanks with a wire mesh lid or gerbilariums are the best choice of housing for gerbils. All the bedding is contained in the tank, there's plenty of room for them, there's little for them to chew on, and it's pretty much escape-proof. It's also easier to clean than plastic cages, and it'll last longer.

If you're set on getting a rotastack, just get the cage from the store. Then, find a different place to get the gerbils such as another pet store, a breeder, or someone rehoming their gerbils.

The gerbilarium is the best home for your gerbils and pets at home is right (i hate agreeing with people).

You can us a rotastack but i don't believe that they are suitable any rodents. unless you buy a good few of them and put them together and this would cost more money than a gerbilarium.

And here is why, a single gerbil needs 10 us gallons of space and every gerbil after that needs 5 more gallons. even two normal size rotastack are not 10 gallons.

The reason for space are simple gerbils as they get old become more territorial and with at less 10 gallons of space they are more then likely to fight to the death.

And yes a gerbil can if he wants to chew his way out of a rotastack, u were just lucky. I had a gerbil chew out of the lit of by glass tank in less than five minutes after i fix the lit with wire mess he was out again.

I used to use a glass fish tank for gerbils so that the sand or bedding didn't fall out. When I tried a rotastak with a dwarf hamster, he ate an escape hole through the plastic within a matter of days. Check the reasons why the pet shop are advising you in one particular direction. It sounds like they are being responsible pet sellers, but they could also be on commission!

    Good luck x

Its one of those things though, your last gerbils didn't chew holes but these might and you will have little way of telling until they are well gone. Is there no other place you could get gerbils? Perhaps a local breeder? I think in this case you need to respect the views of Pets at Home as they are entitled to make sure that you provide a safe environment for any pets they sell. What is the reason you can't have a gerbilarium? Is it just that you already have the rotastak?

Rotastack cages aren't the best for gerbils. Aquariums are.

Get a 20+ gallon tank for a pair of gerbils and fill it with a ton of bedding so they can burrow (their natural behavior).

I am from the USA but am familiar with Pets At Home. I am on a forum called eGerbil forum. (www.egerbil.com) and click on the forum tab. They have had problems with Pets At Home as well.

You can get the gerbillarium but they won't be happy in it and I am glad that you don't want to purchase it!
