The face the wheel bolts to, or where?

Update:

The width between the tyres track not how to set the tracking for instance the lotus elise is measured at -

Track = F: 1457 mm & R: 1507 mm where would you measure that?

    It used to be measured through the Vertical centre line of the wheel bearings on each side.

    Wheel base is measured, front to rear, from the centre of each hub.

    This way it doesn`t matter to the manufacturer about tyre size,wheel size etc that can be altered later. Their measurements remain static.

    Both might be slightly inaccurate. Say your car is out by 2.5% too short and your pedometer is out by 2.5% too long - the different is 5% or about 80 metres per mile, over say, a 5 mile run this is 1/4 mile difference. So that's one reason that they might be different Another reason - Do you run exactly the same route as the car (for example, running ON the road rather than the footpath). if you run on the outside curve of a circular route but measure the inside curve with the car then the 2 distances will be different. Also things like crossing roads and things like that do make a difference. In a measured race (accurately measured using a measuring wheel) a runner might typically run a few % too far - even if its 5% difference, that's still 1/4 mile over a 5 mile run (so far this is adding up to 1/2 mile difference!). So thats another reason The third one that I would go for straight away is how accurate is your pedometer set up? If you run a measured mile on a track you will take so many steps. On the road you might take a different number of steps - going up hill might be more steps per mile, down hill fewer, stop-starting to make way for people or to cross roads takes different numbers of steps too. This could be a third reason for the differences. I would say that neither are fully accurate but both could give you a good estimate of how far you have gone. Oh, GPS isn't much better - there are errors with those systems too but again, they give you a good estimation of your running distance. It doesn't make a huge difference to your running though, I tend to pick a route of about, say 5 miles, and if its 5.2 or 4.8 its still a good run - the important bit if you are a runner is that you get out there and run!!

    If your using a tape measure: you can take measurements from the inside or outside edge of the tread (ie inside edge to inside edge or outside edge to outside edge, wheel to wheel or centre to centre point of tread), note: both tyres should be the same make if you are taking measurements from the inside or outside.tread area!!

    Advice is to take it to tyre dealer and have it done properly, as said earlier in answers, i have had my car Lazer aligned with great driving result, This system takes readings from all four wheels plus the steering wheel which is locked in the central straight line driving position. The cost was £25 and worth every penny as it saves on tyre wear and gave great driving results.

    Im a plant mechanic and use a tape to track the steering on tractors which is accurate enough as they are low speed (30-50 kph)

    Im assuming here that your working on a car and would'nt recommend this method for safety.reasons.

    Hope this is of help for you.

    The track is actually center of tire to center of tire. The easiest way to measure that is to measure from the outside face of one tire to the inside face of the other.

    straighten up your wheels and measure from the front wheel right to the back one.

    center of left wheel to center of right wheel.

    If it is for tracking the wheels, then it is between the inside of the front tyres at the front, and the inside of the front tyres at the back of the front tyres. The smaller measurement to be at the front. The tyres will then be "toe in"
