9 month old no teeth ?

Do you think I should start trying to feed him stage 3, or soft solids even though he has no teeth yet. Hes getting bored with the stage 2's and always wants what I have. But Im afraid of him choking.

Update:

What Im asking is, have you tried this with your baby? And do you think he could mash the food with his gums while we are waiting for the teeth to come?

It's fine if it's soft enough to squish between your fingers easily. He won't choke if it can't get lodged in his throat. Stage 3 should be fine. It's squishy, and the pieces are small enough that it wouldn't get stuck.

Sure, yeah. They mash food with tongue and gums, not teeth anyways. My son's first front teeth started cutting in at about 9-10 months too. His problem isn't that he can't chew, it's just that he has had to learn not to gag on textured food. If your son doesn't gag, he's ready for anything that is soft enough to smash with tongue against roof of mouth or with gums. My son (now 12 m) eats shredded toast and even chicken nuggets, in addition to stage 3's - but he has only incisors.

My older daughter didn't get her first tooth until 12 months old. My younder daughter is 14 months old and still doesn't have any teeth. When they were switching to solids, they got bored of baby food real fast. They wanted real food. I was real nervous of choking so at first for a while I gave them soft foods like pastas and cut it up real small. They love rice too, with soup. I even gave them chicken nuggets and meats, softened and cut up of course, and they doing great.

But yes, I would start with Stage 3 first to get him used to eating lumpier foods but you don't need to do that for very long, probably just for a couple of weeks.

Try making him some baby food. Like sweet potatoes, peas, green beans just add more flavor to it like kosher or natural sea salt. That should get him more interested and keep you at easy with the choking risk. As for the the teeth not coming in try a big flat piece of non peppered beef jerky. It's the best thing for cutting chompers.

Teeth used for chewing aren't the front teeth, its the back teeth. So not having front teeth (the ones that come in first) aren't a pre-requisite for lumpy foods--babies use their gums to mash that stuff up. (Try it sometime--how much can you really chew with just your front teeth? I didn't think it through until sometime challenged me to that and then I understood! LOL)

  • The teeth we use to chew don't come in until much later anyways...those front teeth that babies get first are useless for chewing. Try chewing something... what teeth do you use? You use your molars.... gums are nearly as good for mashing as those molars. My daughter does have her bottom front teeth but they are useless when I give her finger food and chunkier stuff...which she still manages just fine with those gums.

His gums are probably pretty firm anyway, just be sure to supervise and make food all bite/swallow size. His should be fine to try other less sloppy foods. It's a good thing that they aren't through yet, I was told that the longer they take to come through the stronger, and less prone to cavities they will be.

Yes start out with dry toast and crackers just watch him the gums are hard and they will learn to suck and chew you just got to try it and watch him they have teething cookies that are good for them too that will help them learn to use their jaws to strengthen them.He will be find if you just watch him dont give him hard hard stuff like candy
