how long does raw eggs last (still in shell) if they are in a refrigator?

my 3rd generation cousin wife inlaws made us eggs that were dated 2/9/08. I didnt know eggs could last that long. We are having these eggs tomorrow for breakfast. Should I be concerned?

If I were you, and we have hens laying eggs every single day in our jungle back garden. Get a tall glass of tap water, one at a time pop an egg in (in shell of course) if the egg floats (which I think it will, they all will) they are too old to eat, a fresh egg will sit on bottom, a week old egg will point (sitting like it was in an egg cup) an older egg will float half way up glass (maybe 2 or 3 weeks) your friends eggs, will float on the surface and you should not eat them, really really truely, don't do it. they will be so dehydrated as shells are porous and dehydrate in the fake environment of the fridge they will be nasty. Remember this for the rest of your life, a fresh egg sinks to the bottom. DO NOT GO THERE! HAVE CORNFLAKES! Love Judith, the chicken whisperer. Merry Christmas from OZ

Is that date February 9th or September 2nd? Some put dates as MM/DD/YY and others DD/MM/YY. OK, if it is February, they MAY still be good, but they will have lost a LOT of moisture. You may find the egg is only half full instead of mostly full. If the date is September, then you will likely have good eggs still. In the moist environment of a fridge, eggs lose moisture, but at a slower rate than if left on a kitchen table. Go ahead and creak the eggs, but do it over a small bowl to the side so if an egg IS bad, it does not spoil the whole thing you are putting the eggs into. I have made fried eggs with eggs over 6 months old before. Turned out OK, but the whites were quite rubbery because of the lack of moisture, but otherwise they tasted just like eggs bought yesterday. Old eggs do NOT do well in baking because of the moisture loss, but if you add a little water to something like a cake mix, it will turn out just fine. It really is simple, if you crack the egg and it smells bad, then it IS bad.

No, use them now or throw them out. If there are cracks in the shell then all the bacteria on the outside of the shell can contaminate the inside. Leaving them like that will only give that bacteria time to multiply to dangerous levels. Consider cooking a pound cake or two, they use a lot of eggs. Or a Quiche. Or ask a question here about a recipe that uses a lot of eggs.
