What is the easiest way to introduce cats to a dog?
We have had the dog (mastiff/coon hound mix) since she was a puppy, now 31/2 years old. We just got a 7 month old and year old cat. We have kept them apart so far but we want to have them share the house.

all the animals know the others ones are in the house. your best bet is to allow them to introduce themselves naturally under your supervision. gate the dog in a room with you and wait for the cats to come check her out. that way if they get nervous, they can get away.

Depending on the dog's attitude towards small animals, cats, etc. this could be easy or difficult.
It is natural for dogs to chase small animals especially when they run from them, so, keeping the dog calm when around the cats and not allowing any "dog" excitement, barking, lunging, will get them used to each other much faster.
You could start the introduction process this way, have the dog on a leash, then allow the cats into the room. Let them walk around on their own, all the while watching the dog very closely for any signs of fixating, shaking, whining, barking of course, pulling to get toward the cats. Correct this behavior immediately with a quick tug and release on the leash and a stern NO, STOP, etc.
Correct every time, even the smallest moves or signs of anything more than passive interest.
Do not touch or hold the dog and do not use her name, just the tug/release on the leash and a control word.
You may want to practice this for just 15-30 mins or so a few times a day till the dog gets the idea.
You may find that the dog responds very quickly to your direction but use the leash method to feel out the situation. This way you can completely control the dog's response & excitement and this will keep the cats calm and relaxed also. If either is excited, tense, that energy will cause the other to also be tense. Keep all calm.
Practice this efveryday for as many days as you need to until the dog is calm and uninterested.

Speak the word -gentle- in a soft tone but before you introduce the cat.
When the cat appears keep warning the dog with a soft tone -gentle-
Do this a little at a time with repeated attempts until they are all familiar and have accepted the fact that they will be living together. Their scents wil be picked up and there will be no startling surprises.

this is what i did with mine
put the new animal (in your case the cats) in carriers, then have the dog go up to them and smell them and stuff, and if they show nice signs then let them out one at a time but hold the cat. then do it for the next one.
if the dogs reacting negative towards them, keep them seperated for a few more days, but let the cats out once in a while, while you put the dog in a different room for a while just so when he comes out he will get used tot heir smell, then do it again, or hold the cat and let him sniff them and stuff.
EDIT: also for the most part my dog liked my cat. but he's a golden retriever mix and lieks to play and would play too hard sometimes, and bite her neck or chew on her head (gently) and id get him to stop, so if theyre around each other supervise them for a while. then he'd just play with her like biting her tail or something, and my dad said let them fight it out, all it took was my cat to hiss and scratch my dogs nose once, and after that my dog left her alone. they get along great though...my cat will sleep right next to my dog, and they never fight anymore, just make sure theyre not HURTING each other.

Put the cat ina .ittle carrier thingy for a bit and let the dog go near them and sniff all they desire. They cat will be safe from the dog and the dog will be safe from the cats claws. Sure the cat may not like this at first, and they will have there pissy fghts and chases and swatting wars but they will learn to live with each other.

Put the cats in two separate carriers and put them in the room with the dog. This keeps the cats safe.

put the cats in a cage and allow the dog to sniff around. yeah they will spit and hiss but they will eventually get used to each other and you will prob find the cats will rule the roost
