Lactose Intolerant...help?
I've been lactose intolerant all my life. I've always been able to eat cheese with no problem, but straight milk made me very sick. Ice cream would give me a slight stomachache every time I ate it but I would never get really sick as long as I only had it once a month. Sour cream never really bothered me all that much, but I never ate it often.
Suddenly, in the past month, I'm getting bad reactions. Ice cream and sour cream give me a bad case of the runs for the entire day - yeah, disgusting, I know, but you can't help me if you don't know what's happening. Cheese still appears to be okay. I never drink straight milk, still. But I'm really concerned.
My parents won't bring me to the doctor because they say it's not all that serious. I know sometimes things get worse when you get older. But it happened so quickly - does anyone have an idea of what might be going on?
Good for you, being able to drink milk :) I'm 17, so I thought I was past the "changing reaction" stage. It's only when I go to Sweet Tomatoes...or at least that's the only place I eat ice cream and sour cream. They might have changed their brand, since I don't think they make those themselves. Hm. I didn't think of that! Thanks! :)
I'm allergic to all Lactaid-type products...or at least, I have a worse reaction with them than I do without them. What's the sour cream alternative? I've never heard of one, and it's a food I eat almost all the time...many of my homemade recipes use it, so I'm pretty limited without it.

Sorry, but you are NEVER past the "changing reaction" phase. As you age things always change with your body, especially when it comes to digestion.
Hard cheese should be ok most of the time because it does not contain lactose usually.
Sour cream can have a range of lactose, (it is around 4% usually), so it is possible that the lactose content of that particular brand went up past your threshold, or they added an ingredient that you are just now developing some sensitivity to.
The same goes for ice cream (it can vary) Sherbets have the least lactose, so you may want to try that instead and see how you react.
For cooking, used tofu or any of the appropriate soy products. Go here for a good substitution list:

Lactaid products have never worked for me either. I only use them if some lactose sneaks as a "hail Mary" move as I call it, lol!
Hope this helps!

Maybe you should just stay away from ice cream and sour cream for now, there are alot of dairy-alternatives out there. There is soy, rice, and coconut ice cream. I know at the health food we have here there is a sour cream alternative. I think if your body isnt responding well to a certain food, you should listen to your body. Maybe focus on eating things that strengthen your body, like dark green leafy veggies. I cant tolerate dairy much either, I have noticed with me some brands affect me and others dont as much. I try to eat all organic and I feel better when I do :)

You may have lost the last of your lactase producing cells as you are getting older. Or if you have had a stomach bug that can sometimes bring it on
You can get lactase tablets from some healthfood shops. I use them if I am having more than about 150ml milk.
Natural yogurt and cheese should be OK as the lactose is fermented out of these two products during their manufacture
You could also try delact milk - where they have used an enzyme to break down the milk - it tastes a bit sweeter though because glucose and galactose (the two parts of lactose) are sweeter than lactose.

I've had it too for my whole life (16 years) and have eventually built my body up strong enough to handle one glass of milk a day, however i hardly drink milk once a week. Like you cheese has always been fine for me, but i have no idea what's happening to you right now. Have you changed products or something? I dunno...
