toshiba satellite laptop won't get past start screen?
My toshiba satellite laptop isn't working! I turn it on and it gets to the black screen that says windows is starting up and has the little bar that moves back and forth as it loads. then after that it's supposed to go to the blue windows screen so i can log in, but it won't. instead the screen turns black and a box pops up saying that windows has encountered and error and needs to terminate the program it them says to click okay to continue or cancel to debug. i've tried both and nothing happenes. the box just goes away and the screen remains black, but the mouse pointer is still visible. i am able to turn it on and off using the power button on my laptop, but every time i turn it on, the exact same thing happens. i have no idea what is wrong with it. my dad seems to think it may have a virus on it. does anyone know of a way i can fix it without having to get a whole new system?
I started it in safe mode by pressing f8 before it got to the loading screen and it didn't go much further than it does in regular mode, the same message box popped up and the screen went blank.

Are you able to boot to safe mode?
When you turn your computer on, first you see the BIOS splash screen (logo of who makes the computer), then a bit of black, THEN you see that Windows XP loading plash screen. If you hit the F8 key a few times BEFORE the windows splash screen, you will be brought to a menu, where the first two choices are Safe Mode, and Safe Mode with Networking. Pick just Safe Mode first. See if you can boot all the way with that. Now, this isn't normal windows, so no mucking about in there. Just try to get to a desktop, that presents you with no popup windows, or notifications. Then shutdown and restart normally.
If you can boot to Safe Mode with Networking, you then can probably download a few cleaning tools from places like
http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
http://www.spybot.net/ Spybot Search & Destroy
http://free.avg.com/ Free automatic anti-virus and anti-spyware protection
Run them from safe mode, and if they want to restart, remember the F8 thing, and always reboot back to Safe Mode with Networking, into those programs report clean.

First have you tried starting in safe mode? To start in safe mode turn and push the f8 key several times. if it starts in safe mode restart if it does not start up you may need to restore system. Do you have the system disks? If you put the number 1 disk in and follow the directions on screen. That may fix it. BUT you will lose all you files and music.
You will need to let the restore run it may take a couple hours but let it run.

Your OS has gotten corrupt with a virus or deleted files. You need to do a recovery either with the OS and drivers discs that should have come with it or it possibly might have come with a recovery partition accessed by tapping the f11 ke during bootup. If there are files needed on the HDD you may want to get an external hdd bay that accepts 2.5 sata drives and put your hdd in and copy files to another computer or to disc. then do the recovery. If you don't have discs and there isn't a recovery partition, call the manufacturer and get the OS,drivers, and software discs that came with it. Or find someone with exact system and use theirs.
